The words of the great American writer Toni Morrison are a reminder of the responsibility we have to one another. It is a message ever-resonant in today’s world, one that often appears increasingly fractured by layers of power and systems of injustice. She calls us to remember that, in times like these, each one of us has a voice, and that voice, how we use it, matters. Our words can and do make a difference, one somebody at a time—and sometimes that somebody is us.
The Sun Place Poets believes in this essential role of language within our individual and collective transformations. Poetry, where our lived experiences, feelings, and social landscapes find expression in language—expressions as unique to each as the people from which they come—is a space ripe with the potential for illuminating connections we didn’t see prior to our encounters with it.
A poem can turn our eyes to a new perspective. It can redirect our sense of the way things are and what we thought to be true. Like light shining through the mist, the poetic can shift our attention to previously obscured places and to what needs to be changed. In our encounters with poetry, whether writing, reading, or listening, we, too, turn inward, reflecting on our relationship with the world. In the sharing of this reflection, we turn back to the spaces we occupy with new eyes, and in our new vision, we can make those communities freer and more just.
