Resolutions are easy to make, even easier to break. But what if a story or idea can motivate us in a whole new way? This hour, TED speakers offer different perspectives on our most common resolutions.

Ewelt said he anticipated 1,500 to 2,000 people would attend over the four hours the event was held, but no official count was available later in the day. Organizers placed about 180 chairs to start with, and more were seen being set up just before the story hour started.

In a recent interview about her latest novel, The Story Hour, Thrity Umrigar declared: "More than anything else I want to tell a story with integrity." The author of a memoir and five previous novels including the bestselling The World We Found, Umrigar has more than realized her ambition with The Story Hour, a taut, suspenseful page-turner with depth, heart, and psychological credibility whose believable and endearing characters ponder the meaning of friendship, the challenges of marriage, and the value of storytelling itself.

Umrigar has created a satisfying story that doesn't go for the easy answers or pat resolutions. Although Lakshmi's broken English wears at the reader after a time and there's barely a shred of ethnicity in Maggie's African-American character, those are minor quibbles about a solid achievement.

VERDICT This satisfying, psychologically complex story will appeal to a wide range of readers. Because its characters are both smart and likable without being sentimental or idealized, it may appeal to the chick lit crowd as much as to readers who enjoy multicultural literary fiction.

Much of the online discussion focused on one particular drag performer whose name included a sexual innuendo, listed at the bottom of the promotional poster with other drag queens. Spady said that performer was never going to be a part of the story hour, and was set to participate in the adult-oriented event also advertised on the poster. That performer has since pulled out of the event entirely because of online threats.

Unfortunately, so far in 2023, 435 anti-LGBTQ bills have been introduced across 44 states. Many of those attack the rights of transgender people, and especially transgender youth. Many others have also attacked drag performers and drag story hours, falsely claiming that this ancient theatrical art form is somehow harmful to children. Marz believes these legislators are targeting the transgender community, egregiously denying basic human dignity in addition to stripping away fundamental rights to privacy, freedom of expression, and speech. Marz proudly stands with our LGBTQ+ transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) friends and is proud to present this new programming at our flagship location.

Drag Story Hour was started in 2015 in San Francisco by author Michelle Tea, who was also the executive director of nonprofit Radar Productions at the time; the first events were organized by Julin Delgado Lopera and Virgie Tovar.[13] Tea, who identifies as queer, came up with the idea after attending children's library events with her newborn son and finding them welcoming but heteronormative.[14] She imagined an event that was more inclusive and affirming to LGBTQ families.[14] The first event was held at the Eureka Valley/Harvey Milk Memorial Branch Library in the LGBT Castro neighborhood of San Francisco and featured drag queens and was well received.[15][14][16] Other early DSH events in San Francisco featured several drag queens of color, including Honey Mahogany, Yves St. Croissant, and Panda Dulce.[14][17][18] As of February 2020, there are 50+ official chapters of DSH, spread internationally, as well as other drag artists holding reading events at libraries, schools, bookstores, and museums.[14] In October 2022, the nonprofit organization officially changed its name to Drag Story Hour, to be more inclusive and "reflect the diverse cast of storytellers."[19]

In 2017 and 2018, the organization had a convicted child sex offender perform in the Houston Public Library.[20] The library had failed to do the background check that is part of its usual process for storytellers. The library apologized and recognized its shortcoming in not properly vetting the performer in question.[21]

Drag queen story hours are highly controversial, and events have met with opposition towards the drag queens and the books being read.[7][25][26] Proponents argue that it helps give children a more positive attitude toward queerness and varied gender expression,[27] while critics argue that they are inherently sexually explicit and/or inappropriate for children.[28] Another criticism is that some schools have not allowed parents to opt their children out of the events if they are uncomfortable with them. Writing for the National Post, Julia Malott also argues that drag queens are caricatures that perpetuate harmful stereotypes about women and "embody regressive exaggerations of femininity". Malott also argues that drag queen story hours are ineffective at their stated goals because "drag queen" is not a gender identity and thus does little to help children understand the concept of gender expression, and because drag is "inherently performative", it does not succeed at "teach[ing] young boys that it's acceptable to present traditionally feminine qualities in everyday life".

In a May 2019 First Things article and a subsequent debate with David A. French, Sohrab Ahmari argued that drag queen story hours presented a challenge to proponents of "conservative liberalism" who emphasized personal autonomy and opposed "the use of the public power to advance the common good, including in the realm of public morality".[32][33] Steven Greenhut responded in a Whittier Daily News editorial that, although he perceived the story hours to be "bizarre and agenda driven", banning them would be an overreach of governmental power and an attempt to legislate morality.[34] In August 2019, a petition by LifeSiteNews and Personhood Alliance, both pro-life activism groups, asked the American Library Association (ALA) to stop promoting the story hours; it gathered nearly 100,000 signatures.[35] The ALA responded by affirming its support for DSH events, stating that it "strongly opposes any effort to limit access to information, ideas and programmes that patrons wish to explore" and "includes a commitment to combating marginalisation and underrepresentation within the communities served by libraries through increased understanding of the effects of historical exclusion."[35]

According to The New York Times on December 20, 2022, drag story hour events "have drawn an increasing number of protests and threats across the country in recent years, including a series of tense demonstrations in New York, a city known for its inclusivity, over the last month."[59] There is a New York City-based nonprofit organization named Drag Story Hour that has operated nationally since 2015.[59][60] 006ab0faaa
