A smartly observed novel rises above its apparently easy structure. Although her mother has made peace with the situation, Hadley is still angry and hurt that her father left them for an Englishwoman. Rebooked on the next flight after missing her plane to London, where she's to be a bridesmaid in their wedding, Hadley is seated next to the English boy who helped her in the terminal. He comes to her rescue again after she confesses she suffers from claustrophobia. A good-looking Yale student, Oliver is smart, funny and thoughtful, though evasive about the purpose of his trip. Their mutual attraction is heightened by the limbo of air travel, but on arrival, they're separated. With just minutes to get to the wedding, Hadley--resentful, anxious, missing Oliver and above all jetlagged--makes her way to the church and the father she's avoided seeing for a year. Narrative hooks and "meet cutes" often seem designed to distract from less-than-compelling content. Here, the opposite pertains. Its one-day time frame and "what are the odds?" conceit bookend a closely observed, ultimately moving tale of love, family and otherwise. Yes, many teens face more compelling problems than those of a smart, attractive daughter of affluent and loving, if estranged, parents; but Smith's acute insights make Hadley's heartache and loss as real as the magical unfurling of new love. With statistics being the way Oliver processes the events in his life and his academic focus, the narrator often chimes in with the probability Hadley and Oliver have of falling in love in an airport, meeting again, or walking away from the love of their life. While it would be highly unlikely for the probabilities to be exact or realistic, especially considering the many variables at play, Love at First Sight makes the sharing of the data a habitual peculiarity. It's whimsical and entertaining, especially when tackling a topic rarely recounted by numbers. However, some researchers did try to scientifically investigate the phenomenon referred to as love at first sight.
Oliver's father, Val, tells him that had he known that Tess would eventually die of cancer after having already fallen in love with her, he wouldn't have done a single thing differently. This prompts Oliver to take the risk to go and see Hadley. He finds her at the reception venue and admits his three greatest fears: germs, the dark, and surprises, due to his mother's cancer diagnosis. Hadley then gives him a happy surprise by kissing him. When she asks him what it is he's researching, he reveals it's the statistical probability of love at first sight. By the end of the film it's revealed that Hadley and Oliver will be married for 58 years and will one day have a daughter.
I believe in lust at first sight. Haha. And interest at first sight. I once paused on the curb of a street (in Fiji) and my eyes locked with the passenger of a car that was stopped at a red light: I could have sworn we were soul mates (I was fifteen, every other guy was my soulmate) but the lights changed, the car drove by and I never saw him again. :\ So while I think that there can be interest at first, love needs some nurturing. (Sorry for the ramble.)

After the lovely extended meet-cute of a plane ride, we first follow Hadley as she sets out to be a bridesmaid in her father Andrew's (Rob Delaney) wedding to his new wife. Between the ceremony and reception, she overhears some guests talking about a memorial happening in Peckham, the same neighborhood where Oliver previously said he would be. Oliver didn't tell her that he was traveling for a memorial, but she thinks that may be his event anyway, and she's sad at the thought of him facing his mom's funeral by himself. Promising her dad to make it back for the reception, she heads straight there to try and find him.
Meanwhile, after Oliver gives an emotional (and quite lovely) eulogy, he happens to find an invite to her dad's wedding reception in her bag. His dad finds him and chimes in with one simple, essential fact: "If I knew the odds that your mother was going to get cancer and die when I fell in love with her, do you know what I would've done differently? Absolutely nothing." All the possible hurt and pain pales in comparison at the chance of lifelong love. So, Oliver piles into his brother's van with the whole family and they race to the reception. He finds Hadley at the reception, he apologizes in his own subtle way, and Hadley accepts his apology with a kiss. She tells him that she's decided to stay in London for Christmas with her dad, and he starts spouting statistics about couples meeting at an airport or because of missed connections.
