Spark Skills is our community education programme, designed to bring people together to learn practical skills while building trust, relationships, and a sense of shared purpose. The goal is simple: equip people with the skills and confidence to take part in collective climate action and to see themselves as part of something bigger than individual change.
The course covers practical, hands-on skills like bicycle maintenance, solar energy basics, energy efficiency, and 3D printing for repair. Every session is built around cooperation and teamwork. Participants learn not only how to fix a bike or wire a panel, but also how to work with others, share knowledge, and create something together.
Spark Skills is delivered as a series of short courses, using interactive, group-based teaching. Our relationship with the City of Dublin Education and Training Board was essential as they were able to provide a tutor and insurance cover for participants. This partnership made it possible to open the course to a wide range of people in the community, without cost being a barrier.
The teaching style is rooted in shared learning — everyone brings their own experience, and the group learns from each other. This makes the sessions relevant to local life, and helps participants see how the skills connect to community needs
We piloted Spark Skills with two groups before running it at scale. Feedback was collected through surveys, discussions, and reflective journals kept by participants. This helped us understand what worked, what needed changing, and how social connections were forming in the group. The evaluation was supported by an Action Researcher from Technological University Dublin, who helped us refine the course after each round.
If you would like to run a version of Spark Skills in your own community, we can share the full curriculum we have developed, along with stock lists for the equipment and materials we use. This can save you time and help you get started quickly. We are also happy to answer questions and offer advice based on our experience of running the programme.

Some pro tips to consider if you want to run a successful programme:
1. Adapt the content to your local context. Use examples, tools, and case studies that feel relevant to your community.
2. Run a pilot. Start small, gather feedback, and adjust before committing to a full programme.
3. Find a delivery partner. Link with a local education and training provider for tutors, insurance, and access to resources.
4. Build in cooperation from the start. Make teamwork a feature of every session, not just a side benefit.
5. Keep improving. Use participant feedback to make each round stronger than the last.
Graduates of Spark Skills have become active contributors to the wider project. They’ve joined volunteer workdays (or Meitheals), helped prepare our space for events, run surveys and door-knocking campaigns, hosted festival stalls, and even built practical infrastructure like benches and bikes for community use. Many keep coming back to help deliver future courses.
Spark Skills has shown that when people learn together, they do more than pick up new skills — they build the confidence and connections to take action for their community.
