A collection of the collective memory of Jewish Houstonians' Childhoods
ABOUT
Dear reader,
Eighth graders at the Emery/Weiner School have a tradition of working on "Passion Projects," where students are given the opportunity to focus on something they are interested in. The projects can be educational for ourselves or a selected audience, encourage people to make a change, or find a way to support an organization or community. I am passionate about history, writing, and Judaism, so my passion project focuses on analyzing the similarities and differences in the collective memory of Jewish Houston natives' childhoods across generations. Collective memory is the shared memories and perspectives of a group of people about the past.
For my project, I interviewed 9 Houston Jewish natives, three per generation. Within their stories, I analyzed patterns within and throughout generations. This website is a portfolio and an archive of my findings. I decided to integrate my passion for writing by creating a story archive organized by generation, each poem drawn from a different interview, which you can access on the "Story Portfolio" page. You will also find data, including graphs of patterns from my interviews, on the "Data Collection" page. On the ""Become A Part of the Story" page, you can do your own form with actual questions that I asked the interviewees so that you can become a part of the story.
I believe that history deserves to be shared through stories being passed down. I hope this archive preserves even the tiniest bit of the Jewish Houston community's story. I hope you enjoy!
Sincerely,
Amelia
