You get a small percentage of what they spend.

For example, let's say a business offers their products for sale via an affiliate program. If you manage to get enough people to click on their link and a sale is made, you are each awarded a percentage of the sale. The percentage is low, about 1-2%. So if your link generates a sale of $100, you would only get $90.
