The Selfish Christian
So what is 'The Selfish Christian' and why should you care?
More importantly, who is a selfish christian?
First: This is not an attack on Christians, people of faith or religion. It is unfortunate that when people like me comment on the actions, conduct and hypocrisy of people who claim to be religious, their first reaction is to falsely accuse me of attacking religion. They don't like it when somebody points out a major problem!
Second: The story behind this website is simple, I noticed that some people of faith (Christians, Muslims and others) had an ability of being able to rationalize their behavior, regardless of how it affected others and I've grown tired of their abuse of religion in general. I've also grown tired of their abuse towards people and faiths they don't agree with. Instead of projecting love, they come across as being very angry. Perhaps this explains why there seems to be so many violent acts being committed in the name of religion!
(In my opinion, the selfish Christian will resort to some type of abuse that would include verbal, physical or psychological abuse/violence - which I have observed many times!)
So basically, the answer to the first question is that 'The Selfish Christian' website is being used as a commentary on religion and how people use it to rationalize their actions. I will be writing about events observed and commenting on what I thought.
For example, I had a person of very strong Christian faith tell me that they knew that nobody in their family would get Covid-19 and that it was their sovereign right to do whatever they wanted. They insisted that this was faith in God. In addition, they felt that people were under no obligation to respect others during the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic by self-isolating, wearing masks, avoiding crowds and that there should not be any rules, regulations or laws that forced people to do some of the things listed.
So here I am, listening to a rant from a very devout person, wondering what part of the Bible are they using to justify this anti-social behavior?
Is this what Christians believe? Is this what Muslims believe? Is this being taught in Judaism?
So I asked this person about:
Luke 6:31
Luke 10:25-28
Mathew 7:12
Leviticus 19:34
Galations 5:14
Romans 13:8-9 NIV
I even asked about Tobit 4:15 and Sirach 31:15, from the Old Testament Deuterocanonical, Eastern Orthodoz & Non-Chalcedon sources to see if this person could make the connection and understand my point.
The person dismissed it all, saying that it did not apply because 'he' knew that God would protect him and his family.
So I tactfully asked about: Matthew 4:7
Again he dismissed that because, "He had faith in Jesus!"
I asked for his opinion about parents who refused to have their children vaccinated, then allowed those children to travel overseas and upon their return to the States, caused local epidemics that resulted in financial lost, injury and deaths. "It was their right" was his reply!
Later that night, I thought to myself: The Selfish Christian
He was using religion to rationalize his antisocial behavior and had no compassion, empathy or civic responsibility towards friends, neighbors, relatives, strangers, community, state or country. His extremist views, closed-minded opinions, anger, intolerance and hatred was shocking - none of which is blatantly apparent when you first meet him.
So the website "The Selfish Christian" was created!
I will be writing about things observed and how I react. I will be sharing my thoughts and feelings as well. Please keep in mind that this website is not limited to just religion. I will also be writing about science, current events, pandemics, epidemics as well as other issues.
While reading, please keep in mind that I have changed my opinions on subjects as I learn other peoples viewpoints. If a person can express themselves well while presenting factual opinions, I have been known to change my opinion.
In support of my opinions, I will be providing links to well-respected websites and sources. I will not be providing links to extremists websites or to sites that rely on fringe science.
FYI: As a Constitutional Conservative, I support all parts of our Constitution. Plus, even though I am an ordained minister, I am more spiritual than religious. I am also far more accepting of others than what people realize. Basically, if your beliefs and actions do not cause harm to others, if you do not try to force your beliefs onto others, then there is a good chance that I would be fine with you!
In closing: I should also point out that this website will, from time to time, use copyrighted material under "Fair Use" terms to the extent allowed by rules, regulations and law.
