Dr. Mina Adamos had a normal happy childhood with a loving family...until she was 17, after which a series unfortunate events reshaped her life. Her entire family was on a family trip back from Yosemite when a sudden mudslide caused the car to go off-road. The end result was catastrophic"
Her mother was put into a coma and after 3 weeks on life support eventually passed away
Her father was paralyzed from the waist down with the spinal column of the foramen canal collapsing around the lower thoracic spine
Her younger 12 year old brother, Adam, being in the back with her, fortunately didn't suffer the same level of injury, but still took months of physical therapy to be able to walk normally again
During this entire time, the burden of supporting her family financially fell squarely on her adolescent shoulders. Her 18th birthday was only a month away and she enlisted that day in the US Navy, leveraging the money & benefits to help support her family. She served for 6 years, eventually making her way through college, discovering a passion for research and getting a bachelors in pre-med with a focus in virology. It wasn't easy, but still she was grateful for the family she had, along with the family she made while serving abroad.
Her particular unit lost several members in Afghanistan in 2009. It was a particularly hard time for her, and during shore leave she and her squad mates all got tattoos of Phoenix, with "Scala Ascensio" on the inside of the wings, in honor of their fallen comrades, and to symbolize surviving the adversity.
It was during her 6th and final year that she met Commander Daniel Miller, chief medical officer, and unknown to her at the time, a member of the Adamantine Arrow. And while he sensed potential in her abilities, her awakening was not quite ready to happen
When her service was done, and she finally was able to spend time at home & focus on graduate school, she started to notice her father beginning to be absent-minded, repeating the same stories, forgetting where parked, etc. Eventually this escalated to a point she could no longer ignore, and she took him into the VA clinic where she had been interning. The results from the MRI and PET scan were conclusive...her father had middle-stage Alzhiemers.
She was 24 at the time, and her brother Adam had just turned 19 & finished his trade school accreditation for a certified auto-mechanic. Both of them worked as hard as they could, but the financial encumbrance of their father's medical needs was more than double their combined income.
She reached out to her old mentor, now Captain Daniel Miller, desperate for advice, guidance, even a little sympathy. He began formally mentoring her, and over the next three years she was starting to awaken. Unfortunately conventional medicine yielded little success for her father. After 3 years of extensive research and experimental treatment after experimental treatment, her desperation lead her to try using her magic on her father to see if she could do anything to reverse the progression of his disease. Unfortunately with her limited control, she ended up having the reverse effect. While his neural pathways began repairing, she lost control and paradox exploded through his nervous system, and the end result were clusters of tiny tumors all over the cerebral cortex and corpus callosum.
Only a few weeks later her brother Adam, barely 21, was diagnosed with progressive multiple sclerosis. To make matters worse, this release of paradox attracted the attention of Guardians of the Veil, and a formal inquiry was initiated. Fortunately for her they ultimately decided in her favor. They were able to help her brother Adam; however, there was a price to pay. To protect the cabal, & prevent paradox backlash, his memory of her would need to be wiped. ALL of it. As if she never existed to him. That was the price she had to pay to revert the disease and keep him safe, along with using her own medical expertise & military training to support a mission that was going to be launched in a few months
Hence joining the SSP.
NIMBUS
Much to Mina’s displeasure, her Nimbus is totally girly explosion of flowers and butterflies... and she absolutely hates it. In fact, the more cranky she is, the more those flowers bloom and those butterflies flap
