Q/A with Raj Adhikari
Q. How did your photography journey start and what does it mean to you?
I was passionate about photography from a very small age but I delved into this field even more after I completed my school-level education and went to college. That's when I got my first camera Canon 80D.
Photography, for me, is a medium to speak without words. Not only does it bring the emotions in a frame but also captures the histories and culture that would have been lost a long ago. It also calls for action when it comes to raising voices for contemporary local to global issues. I find myself on the best terms when I am holding my camera. Photography, in fact, works as a therapy for me and is one of the most important parts of my life.
Q. How do you align your academic path with photography? How has this interdisciplinary background influenced your field of art?
Born in a rural village in the mid-hills of Nepal, I have witnessed the beauty of the virgin nature along with the rich cultural diversity in rural Nepal. Not only this, I have intimately seen and somewhat experienced the social issues prevalent in rural Nepali societies that need to be addressed to uplift the rural life of Nepal. That motivated me to pursue a Master of Science in Agriculture with a major in Rural Sociology from Agriculture and Forestry University.
My academics have injected a taste of rural Nepal into my photography artworks. I have played my part in the promotion of nature and the conservation of the culture of such magnificent parts of Nepal. Also, my photography has attempted to call for action to resolve the ongoing issues of rural Nepali societies, may it be child marriage, inequalities, discrimination, or some kinds of agricultural complexities.
Q. How are you paving your path in photography? What strategies are you currently applying to make your work seen by a greater audience?
I am currently engaged as a freelance photojournalist in the theme of nature and culture where my works get featured in different newspapers, magazines, online news portals, and social media pages. Also, I am contributing as a life member of Bird Conservation Nepal and member of the National Forum of Photojournalists Nepal where my works get featured in the form of articles, social media features, and timely exhibitions. I have also taken part in and occupied winning positions in multiple national and international photography competitions like Visit Nepal 2020 photo contest, FAO International Year of Millets 2023 Photo Contest, 35 Awards, and so on. My works have also been exhibited in countries like Brazil and Italy.
Besides that, I display my artwork online through Google Site, WordPress, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn to make my work accessible to a greater audience from any parts of the world.
