To know Oliver Bailey was to know a driven, resilient man who put his heart and soul into the restaurant and beer scene in Huntington, WV.
Ollie worked in Huntington-area restaurants for 20 years, starting first at Sonic in Barboursville, then Olive Garden, Blackhawk, the Wedge, Backyard and the Peddler. As a driven worker, he would grill, wash dishes, seat customers, pour drinks, plunge toilets, stack wood, deliver beer — whatever was needed. As a good manager, Ollie hired and fired as necessary, trained workers in job (and life) skills, processed timesheets and schedules, made food orders, and filled in any gaps that popped up.
Oliver believed he could lead best by example, often choosing to actively participate in the task at hand rather than sit back and watch others work. If a job needed to be done, from the front to the back of a restaurant, he would and could do it. Oliver was not just a boss, but he would help guide others on their way.
To honor Ollie’s legacy after his passing, his family will award a $2,500 cash prize to one Huntington-area restaurant worker who embodies the traits all knew and loved about Oliver: drive, resiliency, loyalty, strength, and fairness.
The 2024 nomination form is now open and will close March 10. Anyone, 18 and up, who works any service industry role in the Huntington area is eligible. Applicants can be nominated, or self-nominate.
Oliver’s family will select the winner based on the nominations and present the award around Ollie's March 18th birthday, and his favorite holiday, St. Patrick’s Day.
