The Yogi Bear Show is an American comedy animated television series and the first entry of the Yogi Bear franchise produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions that centers on the misadventures of forest-dwelling Yogi Bear in Jellystone Park. The show debuted in syndication on January 30, 1961 and ran for 33 episodes until January 6, 1962.[1] Two other segments for the show were Snagglepuss and Yakky Doodle.[2] The show had a two-year production run.[3]

The Yogi Bear Show premiered on January 30, 1961, on some major city markets, although the show was not broadcast on the same day of the week, or the same time, in every city's affiliation in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Like The Huckleberry Hound Show, some major city markets picked up the program from independent stations such as WPIX in New York City, KTTV in Los Angeles, KTVU in San Francisco, WGN-TV in Chicago, and KTVT in Dallas. In Canada, the show was split into two networks, with most episodes aired on the CTV Television Network with a few CBC Television networks picking up a few episodes in syndication. In Australia, the show aired on the Nine Network. In the United Kingdom, the show had its premiere on Christmas Day 1962 on ITV in all across England.

Only a few locally produced children's shows reran segments of The Yogi Bear Show into the 1970s and into the 1980s. Chicago's WGN-TV rarely picked up segments from The Yogi Bear Show among others on Ray Rayner and his Friends until its cancellation in 1980; and in the United Kingdom, BBC One rarely picked up segments of the show during its "Children's BBC" block in the 1980s.

The Yogi Bear Show along with mixed Yogi Bear segments from The Huckleberry Hound Show returned to television on cable-only Nickelodeon, airing from 1990 until 1993, when it then moved to the then-one-year-old Cartoon Network, along with its sister station Boomerang in 2000. The show aired on Cartoon Network until 2004 because of Boomerang airing the show during the time. From November 26 until November 30, 2020, Yogi Bear segments from both Huckleberry Hound and Yogi Bear shows returned to Boomerang for a four-day Thanksgiving weekend. Along with Huckleberry Hound being aired on the same four days, both Snagglepuss and Yakky Doodle segments were not aired during the period; instead, they were replaced by another Yogi Bear segment to fill the block in separate times.

Yogi Bear is an anthropomorphic animal character who has appeared in numerous comic books, animated television shows, and films. He made his debut in 1958 as a supporting character in The Huckleberry Hound Show.

Yogi Bear is the first breakout character in animated television; he was created by Hanna-Barbera and was eventually more popular than ostensible star Huckleberry Hound.[30] In January 1961, he was given his own show, The Yogi Bear Show, sponsored by Kellogg's, which included the segments Snagglepuss and Yakky Doodle.[31] Hokey Wolf replaced his segment on The Huckleberry Hound Show.[32] A musical animated feature film, Hey There, It's Yogi Bear!, was released in 1964.

Besides often speaking in rhyme, Yogi Bear had a number of catchphrases, including his famous chant of excitement and greeting ("Hey, Hey, Hey"), his pet name for picnic baskets ("pic-a-nic baskets"), and his favorite self-promotion ("I'm smarter than the av-er-age bear!"),[40] although he often overestimates his own cleverness. Another characteristic of Yogi was his deep and silly voice. He often greets the ranger with a cordial, "Hello, Mr. Ranger, sir!" and "Hey there, Boo Boo!" as his preferred greeting to his sidekick, Boo Boo. Yogi would also often use puns in his speech and had a habit of pronouncing large words with a long vocal flourish.

Australian voice actor, animation historian and impressionist Keith Scott provided Yogi's voice in a Pauls commercial and the live show Hanna-Barbera Gala Celebrity Night at the Wonderland Sydney amusement park in Australia, where Yogi and other Hanna-Barbera characters including Huckleberry Hound, Scooby-Doo, George Jetson, Fred Flintstone, Barney Rubble, Wilma Flintstone, and Betty Rubble make guest appearances.[18][19]

Animated classic THE YOGI BEAR SHOW chronicles the adventures and mishaps of Yogi Bear and his best friend, Boo Boo. Yogi and Boo Boo are always trying to steal picnic baskets from campers in Jellystone Park, but they never quite get away with it, thanks to Park Ranger Smith. And Yogi's antics are worth watching. In one episode, for example, he falls for a female bear he sees on a circus train. The not-so-sly Yogi becomes so obsessed that he leaves Jellystone Park (even though he's not supposed to). He heads to the closest circus in hopes of finding his ladylove, but ends up getting thrown into a dangerous act with lions and other animals instead.

Slight violence is the only potentially eyebrow-raising element. When Yogi gets into trouble, he sometimes finds himself running away from bullets. But even though weapons find their way onto this show from time to time, blood is never seen, and Yogi never retaliates with a weapon. Everything else, including some light romance, is innocent.

When watching Yogi Bear, expect fun antics and silly adventures. Yogi's trademark saying -- "I'm smarter than your average bear" -- is catchy and endearing, because his lack of cleverness is usually what gets him into trouble in the first place. This aspect of Yogi's personality can be extremely relatable for kids; sometimes they think they know more than they do, and that's why they get into trouble, too.

Cindy is a kind, sweet and optimistic bear with the spirit of a Southern belle. She rarely engages in the same antics as Yogi and Boo Boo and does not share the same antagonistic relationship with Ranger Smith. Her romance with Yogi is typically portrayed as on-again/off-again, with her pursuing him, while he avoids and evades her advances. Just as often, however, Yogi is shown to return her affections.

Cindy is a big and tall anthropomorphic bear with taupe fur, thin black eyebrows, black eyes, a tan muzzle, a normal-sized black nose, pink fur on her ears and some tufts of hair on top of her. She has a white flower on the top of her hair and wears a blue tutu, a yellow scarf and carries a blue parasol.

He tries (usually unsuccessfully) to keep Yogi from doing things he should not do, and also to keep Yogi from getting into trouble with Ranger Smith. Often he would say "But Yogi, Mr. Ranger isn't gonna like this," or some variation. It is not readily apparent whether Boo-Boo is a juvenile bear with a precocious intellect or simply an adult bear who is short of stature. However, in the episode "Cub Scout Boo-Boo", Yogi tries to persuade Boo-Boo to become a Boy Scout. Boo-Boo declines the offer, but Yogi corrects him by saying that he will be joining the "Cub Scouts", which Boo-Boo accepts. he has a pet frog-mouthed turtle named Turtle, and must help Yogi save Jellystone (and Turtle) from Mayor R.
