Perhaps no other metro system plays such a pivotal role in the growth of their city than Hong Kong's Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation. From its desperate start for mass transporting the growing population, to the funding challenges for the capital works, its success as made it a vital cog in creating new towns, and now transporting half of Hong Kong traffic. Along its journey since the late '70's, MTR has now become one of the key authorities on the Mass Transit Railway design, operation and implementation, globally.
As a seasoned designer with over 25 years immersed in the intricate world of MTR stations design, I've witnessed first hand the system's evolution and its profound impact on the city's landscape. This has also led me to try understanding the simple history of this city state, the challenges after the second world war and the growth of Urbanism that followed. I'm excited to share the insights gained from years of study and experience, designing and unravelling the stories behind the iconic stations that have become synonymous with Hong Kong.Â
This paper compliments the earlier Urbanisation, Mass Transit & Metro Station Design paper and dovetails into the MTR section there.
