The Mask is an American media franchise based on the comic book series of the same name by Dark Horse Comics. It revolves around a mask that gives individuals cartoonish superpowers and the obstacles they must overcome while wearing it.

Stanley Ipkiss (voiced by Rob Paulsen) continues to use the magical mask to fight crime and the supervillains as the mischievous, cartoonish, good-hearted superhero known as the "Mask", while having fun and partying at the same time. In this continuity, Stanley still has the mask. He either pretended to throw it away, or Milo retrieved it from the river. As well, in this series, Stanley can use the mask during both day and night, whereas in the film, it only worked at night.

The opening shots of "The Mask" look like they were salvaged from a desperately low-budget 1950s science fiction movie. Marine salvage operations lead to the rupture of ancient chest that has rested for ages on the bottom of the bay, and a curious wooden mask floats to the surface.

Not long after, disconsolate bank teller Stanley Ipkiss, a genial nerd played by Jim Carrey, is staring into the dark waters and contemplating suicide. He has just been bounced from a nightclub - the latest in a long series of humiliations. But he has a good heart, and when he sees the mask floating with some rubbish, he thinks it is a drowning victim and jumps in to save it.

Consider what happens to Stanley when he puts on the mask. He is instantly transformed into a maniacal whirlwind of energy, dressed in a 1940s-style zoot suit - a cross between the Joker and Aladdin's genie, with elements of the Shadow.

I was not one of the admirers of "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective." Millions were, however. I thought the story surpassed stupidity, and not in interesting ways. But I could sense some of Carrey's unrestrained energy and gift for comic invention, and here - where the story and the decor and the idea of the mask provide an anchor for his energy - Carrey demonstrates that he does have a genuine gift. It is said that one of the indispensable qualities of an actor is an ability to communicate the joy he takes in his performance. You could say "The Mask" was founded on that.

In this loose remake of Black Sunday (1960), a group of skiers in Northern Italy land in a huge crevasse where they find the body of a long dead girl covered by a mask. Out of curiosity and nothing better to do they remove the mask and start playing games with it. Turns out this dead girl is the witch Anibas who had been condemned to die by burning and the mask put on her face to prevent her return.

Lamberto Bava remakes his father, Mario Bava's Black Sunday (aka Mask Of Satan), with a LOT of Evil Dead thrown in to make it more modern. Even the main lead looks like Bruce Cambell. It's pretty cheap but quite fun. This kind of idea was done much better by Michele Soavi in The Church (Soavi also stars in this), but this has a certain trashy charm to it. It even has a Mother Of Tears style ending 20 years before Dario Argento filmed his, so in essence this is just one huge clusterfuck of Italian horror tropes. The funniest thing is the mask, which looks exactly like a baseball catcher's mask. Bizarre choice there, but the whole movie is insane. Also known as Demons 5 in some countries.

A big guy hiding under the bed abducts the couple while they sleep. (Genuinely creepy reveal) They wake up caged in the middle of a farming commune, trapped with several fellow gullible travelers. The men are cattle stock, and the women are the dairy stock. Ewwww. OK, up to this point, the premise holds strong. The disappointing thing is that the film struggles to figure out its voice in the second act. The cultists all (mostly all) wear plastic animal masks at all times. This makes little sense, particularly knowing how hard it is to see or breathe behind those things. Why wear a mask if everyone around you is a like-minded cultist? It would make just doing day-to-day tasks even more of a chore.

This movie was a rejection of Christianity and promotion of vegsnism.

All the cannibals wore farm animal masks, the same animals that many Christians enjoy as part of their diet. The main couple enjoyed a meal of burgers with bacon and cheese. This foreshadowed what they would become.

By showing a role reversal we have the promotion of veganism. The golden rule argument.

By showing Christian iconography, it implied the animals were Christians. Put the two together and you have a decent horror flick.

Have I ever thought what the animal that was killed for my meal? Not really. Will I think about it the next time I give thanks to The Creator for my food. You betcha.

In this film, the subject matter is the main character (Eri) that is the girl stuck in the mask of a doll. This mask is what jumps out at me at first, as the doll mask is very obviously artificial and always smiling, but in the first scene where we see the interaction between her and her friends, all of her friends do not notice this artificial mask.

In the next scene, we are given a glimpse into the backstory of why the protagonist get locked into the smiling mask. We learn that the boy kicked a soccer ball into the fishbowl, breaking it and killing the fish. However, the protagonist, even though we see and hear that she is angry, she puts on a smiling front and says nevermind, she would get another one. One interesting thing I noticed was that the boy was wearing a yellow shirt, and this colour would also appear in the later scenes with Eri in it. We also see many quick cuts between her smile and the eye of the dead fish, building up the tension and anger in her. This is emphasised also with the audio, which makes the viewer feel that something bad is about to happen, and we learn that the catastrophe is Eri being stuck in the smiling mask. The drama resolves with the moping of the broken fish bowl.

In the next scene, we go back to the bedroom where Eri tries to forcibly remove her mask with a toilet plunger, but to no avail. The audio also gives us an insight into what is going on in her mind, and we hear that she is tormented by the same voices of affirmation and praise in the earlier scene. We then see the reappearance of the producer through the phone call, and the scene shot with a wide angle, we see Eri breaking down. This gives us the impression of a sinister foreboding and a future conflict.

In the very strange next scene, we see Eri talking to a goldfish which is of the same size as her, and we come to realise that the fish was the one that was killed by the boy. Here we see Eri apologising to the fish for not coming to terms with her feelings and smiling at the death of it. This scene is again clouded with hues of yellow, with Eri wearing a yellow dress when talking to the fish, and holding a yellow umbrella when burying it. With the confession and the fish advice for courage, Eri does the unthinkable by breaking her face when performing live on stage. It is interesting how the motif of a stage is used as the stage is associated with theatrical performances but it is at this stage where Eri breaks away from the act and her mask.

This film made by a Japanese filmaker, and set in Japan, use this film as a platform to comment on the society and its current trend. By making Eri such a relatable figure, it almost makes us question our personal identity and if our internal self is aligned with our external self. Through the use of the various motifs and colours, it brings out the theme of identity and the idea of hiding being the mask as a form of cowardice. Perhaps also, that this film is a critic of us, where we praise celebrities for being individualistic yet very quickly mimicking them ironically, putting us on a path of destruction. 006ab0faaa
