But they don't remove the lyrics that refer to them. Poor Unfortunate Souls still has Ursula refer to 'this one wanting to be thinner, this one wants to get the girl' but doesn't keep the visuals. So she's referring to 'someone' but then you also lose the moment where visually you see what happens to those who don't fulfill their end of the contract. That original sequence was dark but not too dark. Here Ursula should be tried for war crimes. Even more bafflingly, Sebastian still refers to all the animals doing their things throughout the song but we don't see any of them. We get lots of other stuff that doesn't correspond but they couldn't be bothered to change the lyrics. Why not incorporate the new visuals into the lyrics? It's just shockingly lazy. Again little things like this add up.

She wanted to save Fontaine, which is akin to the want to be human by the little mermaid/Oceanid. However, she could not tell anyone of her situation, pretending to be Archon, which directly parallels the little mermaid losing her voice in the curse. Furina loved Fontaine, and in the end, even sacrificed her happiness for it, while Focalors sacrificed her life.

This movie uses the lore (read: retcon) from the 3rd Little Mermaid direct to DVD sequel of Ursula being King Triton's little sister, but they like don't really do anything with it because the movie is nearly one to one with the original plot wise anyway. They also add some new lore of Ariel's mother being killed by humans and that's why King Triton hates them so much, but they only mention that once anyway so like who cares. No clue if all Ariel's sisters have the same mother tho.

Leaving aside the fact that mermaids do not actually exist and they can look like anything, most of the music in the movie is calypso music, which is originary from Trinidad and Tobago. Sebastian had a Jamaican accent, and I also remember some silk trading by french sailors which was a big deal here in the Caribbean.

Gotcha!!!! I bet you clicked on this expecting to read some racist things based on the title... Well, not gonna happen, I actually think Halle Bailey is a phenomenal performer and embodies the grace and charms of Ariel amazingly, her race is completely irrelevant to me, so yeah, you've been clickbaited... But I do have some thoughts that may be a little controversial about this new adaptation and I wanna discuss them here, I'm open to all opinions and by no means I think it is a bad movie so any words you wanna throw on the comments are welcome. If you haven't seen the movie, don't read cause it may contain some SPOILERS, I personally haven't seen it but I couldn't care less about SPOILERS so I've listened to the soundtrack, read and saw reviews and actual scenes from it.

Before I dig into explaining why I think this movie is ''Problematic'' I would like to highlight all the positive bits within it so I don't sound like I'm just whining. First, Ariel... Halle Bailey's voice is beautiful, such good control and technique and what an amazing delivery, no wonder why Eric got obsessed with it. Her rendition of Part Of Your World not only does justice to Jodi Benson, it also mastered it in my opinion. Melissa's take on Poor Unfortunate Souls is also amazing, she sounds sassy and compelling and really different to the original which I think was a very nice fresh change. About the lyrics change here, I understand why they did it, I've heard many people making a good point about Ursula obviously lying to Ariel in order to convince her to give out her voice and while I think it is a legit point and I personally don't feel triggered by the old verse that was cut out I also understand how some people may find those words outdated and feel triggered by them, so once more that's not a problem for me, plus it makes the song slightly shorter which can be a good thing considering the original was really long. I know people are gonna kill me for saying this, especially because this is a Musical Theatre subreddit and not a Movie Musicals one so I'm assuming most of you guys will disagree with what I have to say now, but I'll do it anyways cause it is my opinion and that's what I'm sharing... I like Eric's new song ''Wild Uncharted Waters'' better than ''Her Voice'', oops... I said it. I think it serves his character development in a better way as he states his motivations and interests here and it is not just three minutes of him singing about a girl's voice, yeah, I mean he does it too here but at the same time he tells us a little bit about himself. About the hyperrealistic animals... Well... I am not a fan of it and I know I'll have a hard time buying all the emotions those amazing voice actors delivered but at least they didn't do what CATS did... Thankfully.

I recently booked a trip for my partner and I to stay at a Little Mermaid room at Art of Animation in January, but have recently seen a lot of negativity towards these rooms. I plan on proposing while we are down there, and this is her first trip to any Disney park, so I want it to be really special. However, I've seen many claims that the Little Mermaid rooms are incredibly far from transportation and that it'd be much smarter to stay at a preferred room at Pop Century. (Pop also has Skyliner access, which is something that is very exciting to me). I checked, and Pop Century does not have any availability during our dates, or I would change the reservation in a heartbeat (and probably save a little too).

TheLittleMermaid makes it pretty close to being the best live action Disney movie, however it still struggles in the villain department. Halle Bailey IS Ariel and I had literal chills throughout her performance. This is a little mermaid retelling like you've never seen before.

My current backstory is her being the youngest mermaid princess who was obsessed with land culture and items. One day her father destroyed her collection and in an attempt to be able to go on land, she made a deal with the mysterious Sea Witch. Now she explores the land as a human, writing a book and learning about the different cultures.

My biggest beef with Ariel (the little mermaid) is that she didnt stay through the Under the Sea number. Sebastian the crab put on the greatest "stay here" campaign ever recorded for her, getting the entire fish communtiy involved, some of which prey on other fish who were present so who knows how much paper work was worked out, and she leaves when they still had like a whole stanza left. I dont know what the fish economy is like or what currency crabs use but i doubt that band worked for free- that looked like weeks of rehearsal with all the dancing, the fish working everything on cue, and Ariel didnt even give him as much as a "thanks but no thanks", making a mockery of Sebastian's name who, from the looks of it, has previous underwater orchestra conduction experience- a rarity in today's world.

After Triton's dramatic destruction of Ariel's collection, Ursula's two eels slither on in, like the serpent in Eden, and put a flea in Ariel's ear about seeking help from the sea witch. Ursula dwells inside the carcass of some long-dead behemoth, guarded by a menagerie of wretched creatures that used to be mermaids and mermen and were foolish enough to strike a bargain with her. We know that Triton exiled her from the palace some indeterminate amount of time prior, but we don't know why. Her song 'Poor Unfortunate Souls' is a great villain anthem that starts out velvety and coaxing, then grows more boisterous and more insistent until Ursula is practically shouting at Ariel to accept her Faustian bargain. The tension climaxes with Ursula's occult chanting, and then Ariel's tail splitting into a pair of human legs as Flounder and Sebastian rush her to the surface.

The climax is spectacular and exciting, starting with Ariel crashing Eric and Ursula's wedding, getting her voice back, and freeing Eric of Ursula's enchantment. But the sun sets and Ariel changes back into a mermaid. Ursula grabs her and takes her back down into the sea, where she's intercepted by Triton. Seeing no other alternative, Triton consents to take Ariel's place in Ursula's "garden", and Ursula seizes his crown and trident. She grows immense, and uses her new power to summon a hurricane and raise wrecks from the deep. Fortunately, Eric is able to use one of these wrecks to impale her, and she dies in dramatic fashion.

The little mermaid live action movie should be cancelled because it has blackwashed a popular character named Ariel, Ariel is a Danish mermaid and the majority of Danish people are white, this proves that Ariel isn't a black mermaid. Blackwashing is when you cast a black person for a non black character. It's very racist to white people.

Disney is making a racist live action movie about the little mermaid because it includes a BLACK actor named Halle Bailey, and just because she sings good doesn't mean she should cast as a WHITE mermaid. This is highly offensive to white people specifically gingers, because they don't get enough media attention.

I know there's people that say she's just a mermaid, I understand she's just a mermaid and she isn't real. But Princess Tiana isn't real either, so there's your logic. So don't use that mermaids aren't real BS because it ain't going to work with me.

Edit 2: Also the actor isn't fucking 16 years old, she's probably 24 and what's with Disney hiring 24 years old to pretend to be a 16 year old that doesn't sit well with me. Disney should of done a actor that's 16, with red hair just like with the 1989 movie little mermaid, exactly same eye color, white skin.
