When you're a quilt instead of a sheet, being a ghost is hard! An adorable picture book and a matching quilt make for a wonderful memory with your special little one.

We will be making our version of the Little Ghost Quilt and have copies of the book available for purchase. This is a basic quilt and a great way to start your quilting journey.

He doesn't know why he's a quilt. His parents are both sheets, and so are all of his friends. (His great-grandmother was a lace curtain, but that doesn't really help cheer him up.) He feels sad and left out when his friends are zooming around and he can't keep up.

But one Halloween, everything changes. The little ghost who was a quilt has an experience that no other ghost could have, an experience that only happens because he's a quilt . . . and he realizes that it's OK to be different.

One Halloween he ends up on a porch railing for a better view, and is mistaken for a blanket -- he's picked up and taken on a trick-or-treating journey. He keeps a little girl warm, gets a little sticky, and escapes late at night when everyone in the house is asleep. His adventures make him the hot topic in his peer group after that!

This is a gentle tale, and the illustrations match the tone of the story perfectly. The colours are muted, and the images feel a little bit retro. If you're looking for a book that's sweet instead of scary, and you love the idea of a patchwork ghost descended from a checked tablecloth and a lace curtain - well, you'll love this charming story. Great for any bedtime reading for quilters and textile lovers!

My cousin Melanie sent me a cute idea on Facebook recently. Someone had bought this book, then made their own little ghost quilt to match it. Since I work at an elementary school, and with kindergartners, I thought I might as well make my own little ghost quilt too!

You obviously enjoy Halloween and Halloween crafts. Which came first: the desire to write a ghost story or the desire to write a story about a quilt? Or did it all come together at once?

What was it like to marry these two creative pursuits, writing and quilting, one tactile and one not? Did it feel natural or was it a challenge to put a quilt on the page and words to the quilt?

Since he was a quilt he could not whirl and twirl around like his parents and friends. I fell in love with the book and bundled a baby ghost quilt with the book and gave it away as presents to my nieces.

Ben, our 3-year-old grandson, especially loved his patchwork ghost hand puppet. He immediately found his ghost costume and was ready to play the part. He even slept with his little ghost the first night.

Let me show you how easy it is to make a patchwork ghost hand puppet. I made four of them and it took me half a day. Of course, I was taking photos along the way, playing with measurements and writing down notes, so it will probably be faster for you.

Since our youngest grandchild is just a one-year-old, I made a smaller version for her. The other three ghost puppets were made with the dimensions above. They fit the hands of a 8, 5 and 3 year old just fine, but they were a little snug on the older girls. You might want to make a quick test-ghost (before you start) using a solid piece of fabric. Remember, the quilted ghost puppets will shrink up quite a bit from all of the layers and quilting.

Once fabrics were decided upon, ordered and received, from start to finish it took me a couple of months, mainly because I worked on other things in between and those cute little ghosts could be a challenge to line up!

If you are looking for activities to help children accept and celebrate differences, the story The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt by Riel Nason is perfect! It's a story about a little ghost who is different than the rest of the ghosts are sheets, but he is a quilt. Children will love the little ghost and I have designed these materials to focus on SEL and celebrating differences!

RIEL NASON is a Canadian novelist and textile artist. Her acclaimed debut novel The Town That Drowned won the Commonwealth Book Prize for Canada and Europe, and the Margaret and John Savage First Book Award. Riel's original quilts have been exhibited across Canada; she is best known for her whimsical selvage quilts and bold use of color, and she has published two books on the subject: Modern Selvage Quilting and Sew a Modern Halloween. Riel grew up in Hawkshaw, New Brunswick, and now lives in Quispamsis, NB, with her husband, son, daughter and cats.

I fell in love with this little book on my last trip to the States. I visited a little quilt shop in Dallas and they had a fun little blue & white quilt with a face stitched on it. I then discovered this divine book and knew I wanted to share it with you all.

We have copies of the book together with bundles of fabric that will make a throw sized quilt approximately 50" x 50". Such a lovely way to share your love of quilts with a special small person in your life.

Each bundle includes 20 fabrics similar colours to the quilt in the book. Each piece is 6" x 42". The fabric bundle inclues simple instructions to create a quilt just like the Little Ghost who was a Quilt.

Speaking of witches and cities . . . readers so often encounter witches in the woods, standing over a bubbling cauldron. But what about urban witches? Crimson Twill: Witch in the City by Kallie George and Birgitta Sif features a little witch who loves bright colors as she ventures out on a big-city shopping adventure (think the Shopaholic series meets Bewitched). The book is also up for the Silver Birch Express Award, which makes us think there may be a few covens hidden amongst the Ontario Library Association.

The Taking of Jake Livingston by Ryan Douglass gives sixteen-year-old Jake Livingston the ability to see dead people everywhere. But for him, watching the last moments of dead people is easy compared to the racism he faces as one of the few Black students at St. Clair Prep. Just when a little romance enters his life, he encounters a dangerous ghost: Sawyer Doon, a troubled teen who shot and killed six kids at a local high school before taking his own life. Jake finds his supernatural abilities bring him into contact with some very dark forces.

The easy three-part background I used for this quilt originally came from the book Quilts from Larkspur Farm (Martingale & Company, 2002, ISBN # 978-1564773845.) You could easily substitute a single piece of Halloween-themed fabric instead, which makes the quilt even simpler to assemble. To make a three-fabric background like mine, follow these steps:

As summer comes to an end it is finally time for my favorite part of the year, spooky season! This patchwork ghost pillow is a great home dcor accent to add some spooky flair to your house and creating it is a haunting good time. The pillow works up quickly and you can really get creative with your decorative stitches to make different looks for different ghost pillows. They make great gifts for the Halloween fan in your life, or just make a bunch to sprinkle throughout the house!

Use a decorative stitch to add some patchwork quilting flair to the patchwork ghost pillow front. I used stitch #327 on my BERNINA 590. Press your ghost pillow front after you have completed your decorative stitches.

Use a fabric-safe marking tool and trace the ghost template onto the wrong side of the patchwork pillow front, lining up the template with the eyes you stitched down in the previous step. You will need to flip the template to draw the full ghost. The drawn line is the stitching line.

Give your Reindeer different personalities by making ears from different fabric, attaching the eyes upside down, making the nose slightly more round, swapping the direction of the antlers. All these things and more can give you a herd of different reindeer. Plus I find with the handmade nature of these ornaments they are all a little bit different. Check out the different Reindeer Ornaments I have made in the past next.

Using a fabric other that quilting cotton for the body? I used a minty like fabric for the body of one and it was tricky! A little bit slippery so top stitching other fabrics on top had some shifting. I would recommend , again, lots of pins. Also a walking foot would be helpful.

Next up for me is to make it using Shannon Cuddle or Minky Fabric for my daughter. She is not a fan of the feel of quilting cotton. What?? So I always try to make things for her from a softer fabric. Flannel would work great too. See?? so many ideas!

The whole quilt aside from the FPP Star, FPP Mouth, and FPP Snowcaps is Traditionally pieced. And those FPP options are all optional. LOL. The pattern walks you through making all the different styles of trees as well as the patchwork background shown above and a single fabric background.

The Squirrel Pattern is in my Etsy shop as a 20 page PDF digital download pattern. It has a private video linked in the pattern to explain on the more involved planning and cutting parts of the pattern. The sewing itself is very simple all straight line sewing, traditionally pieced. The cutting and planning are explained as best I can in the pattern. The video expands a lot on all the parts that could use a little more explaining. 2351a5e196
