For the first time, a mountain lion harvest season will take place outside the Pine Ridge as the Niobrara Unit is created, encompassing parts of Brown, Cherry, Keya Paha, Rock and Sheridan counties. The objective for the Niobrara Unit is to provide a harvest opportunity for mountain lions that allows the population to remain resilient and healthy, while slowing growth of the population.
Mountain lion presence has been documented in the Niobrara River Valley of north-central Nebraska since 2001. There has been a resident reproducing population there since 2013 and information gathered through research suggests a population that is growing and will be resilient to harvest.

Season 1 in the Niobrara and Pine Ridge units will take place Jan. 2 through the end of February. The season will end immediately in a unit if the annual harvest limit or female sub-limit are reached. The Pine Ridge limit will be four mountain lions with a sub-limit of two females, and the Niobrara limit will be two mountain lions with a one female sub-limit. Up to 320 permits will be issued by lottery in the Pine Ridge Unit and up to 160 permits will be issued in the Niobrara Unit. An auxiliary season would be held March 16 through the end of March if the annual harvest limit or female sub-limit are not reached during Season 1 in a unit.
The Commission also approved changes to the river otter trapping season. These changes eliminate the overall season harvest limit and simplify the check-in process by allowing otters to be checked within two days after the close of the season and before the sale or transfer of the otter. The requirement of daily checking of season status is eliminated as well. The season will be Nov. 1, 2023, through Feb. 29, 2024. Each harvester will be limited to one otter per season.
There is no hunting season for mountain lions. However, mountain lions can be taken year-round when committing or about to commit depredation on any domesticated animal or when deemed an immediate safety hazard.
When the male or female subquota or quota is reached in a hunting district or management unit, the mountain lion season for that subquota or quota in that huting district or management unit will close upon 24-hour notice.
Trichinellosis, also called trichinosis, is a disease that people can get by eating raw or undercooked meat from animals infected with the microscopic parasite, Trichinella. Infection occurs commonly in certain wild carnivorous animals such as bear or mountain lions, or omnivorous animals such as domestic pigs or wild boar.
Check to make sure the zone is open. Once you harvest a mountain lion, you will need to report your harvest and then schedule a time to check it in. Whether you initially report your mountain lion harvest online or by phone, someone will contact you at the phone number you provide to schedule the physical inspection of your mountain lion. Please make sure the jaw is propped open so the premolar tooth behind the upper canine can be removed. If the skull and hide are frozen, they should be defrosted prior to presenting for inspection as a premolar tooth and a teat measurement will be taken from the mountain lion. If the skull and hide are frozen, we will not be able to complete the check-out and you will be asked to reschedule.
When the number of harvested mountain lions reaches the threshold, that zone closes to the additional harvest of mountain lions at sundown the Wednesday immediately following. Before each hunting trip, verify that the zone is still open. View mountain lion harvest threshold information and zone status or call toll-free 877 438-0447.
NOAA Fisheries estimates population size for the U.S. stock of California sea lions in our stock assessment report. From 1975 to 2014, the maximum population growth rate of the U.S. stock of California sea lions was 7 percent per year.
California sea lions have broad front flippers and long, narrow snouts. Subadult and adult males have pronounced forehead crests crowned with tufts of blonde or lighter hair. California sea lions have visible ear flaps, and three to five claws on their hind flippers.
California sea lions are very social on land and in the water, but during the breeding season the males aggressively defend their territories and females fight other females to protect their pups. While on the breeding islands, California sea lions are very skittish of humans and will run into the water if they see or smell people.
California sea lions live in the shallow waters of the eastern North Pacific Ocean. They prefer sandy beaches or rocky coves for breeding and haul-out sites. Along the West Coast, they also haul out on marina docks as well as jetties and buoys. California sea lions range from southeast Alaska to the Pacific coast of central Mexico. Their primary breeding range is from the Channel Islands in southern California to central Mexico. NOAA Fisheries divides the California sea lion population into three stocks (United States, western Baja California, and Gulf of California) based on the location of major rookeries and the international border. The U.S. stock waters ranges from the U.S./Mexico border to Canada. In normal years, male California sea lions migrate during the winter to feeding areas off California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Canada, and southeast Alaska but females and pups stay near the breeding colonies until the pups are weaned. In warm water (El Nio) years, some females are found as far north as Washington and Oregon, presumably following prey.
One of the main threats to California sea lions is getting caught in fishing gear. They can become entangled in many different gear types, including traps, pots, or gillnets. Once entangled, they may drag and swim with attached gear for long distances, ultimately resulting in fatigue, compromised feeding ability, or severe injury, which may lead to reduced reproductive success and death.
California sea lions are protected throughout their range under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. NOAA Fisheries is working to protect them in many ways, with the goal that populations stay stable and do not fall to depleted or threatened levels.
California sea lions can get entangled in fishing gear, causing injury and possibly death. NOAA Fisheries is working to better understand and characterize the frequency, geographic extent, and magnitude of these interactions. We are also working with researchers to find and study ways to safely and effectively make these interactions less likely.
The Lions have won four NFL championships, all of which pre-date the existence of the Super Bowl. The Lions' four championships are tied for the tenth most total championships amongst all 32 NFL franchises;[5] the last of these was in 1957, which gives the club the second-longest NFL championship drought behind the Arizona Cardinals.[6] They are one of four current teams, and the only one in the NFC, to have never played in the Super Bowl.[7] Two of these teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Houston Texans, are expansion teams that began play in 1995 and 2002 respectively.[8] Additionally, the Lions have won only a single post-season game since 1957, and have the NFL's longest active drought between playoff wins, with the Lions' last post-season victory coming in 1991.[9][10][11] The Lions have since lost an NFL record nine consecutive playoff games and hold the NFL record for worst playoff winning percentage.[12][5]
Starting Jan. 1, 2024, cougar hunters may hunt cougar through April 30, except in GMUs where the harvest guideline has been reached and the WDFW director has closed the PMU for cougar hunting for the season.
All cougars killed by licensed hunters during the early and late hunting seasons, and seasons authorized under WAC 220-440-030 shall be counted toward the harvest guideline when it takes effect January 1st.
It is each cougar hunter's responsibility to verify if the cougar late hunting season is open or closed in hunt areas with a harvest guideline. Cougar hunters can verify if the season is open or closed by calling the toll free cougar hunting hotline (1-866-364-4868) or visiting this website. After Jan. 1, 2024, all hunters must report their kills via the cougar hotline within 72 hours (press 3 after the recording), and kills must sealed by WDFW staff within 5 days of making the kill (unfrozen, with proof of sex attached). Also, regardless of harvest, please report your early & late season hunt activity separately via WILD. These are 3 separate requirements.
With Hunters being given the Kings obligation through Aspect of the Lion, there is a change that needs to be made for this ability to not feel so bad to take. This aspect needs to allow talents like Improved Aspect of the Hawk to work with it enabled so that it becomes a competitive spot with BM as well as survival given that most MM will be running lone wolf. The other issue is that with this being an aspect, if the hunter switches to cheetah or monkey, they lose this talent for themselves and everyone else around them. A simple fix to this would be to make Aspect of the lion an aura like Trueshot instead of an aspect.

Senate File 178 recently passed the Senate and would establish a mountain lion pursuit season, which is where hunters could use their dogs to tree lions, but not kill them. Currently, when quotas for lions killed are met or hunters fill their lion tag, they cannot legally continue to pursue the lions for training. 17dc91bb1f
