Pam & Jam's Pumpkin Light 2 (Japanese: パムとジャムのパンプキンライト2 , "Pamu to Jamu no Panpukin Raito Tsū") is the 1992 sequel to the 1990 Kevstersoft game Pam & Jam's Pumpkin Light. While still largely overlooked by critics as a result of its predecessor's underperformance, it is considered by Pam & Jam fans as a monumental improvement over the original Pumpkin Light game, introducing many new mechanics and enemies, the CAMPAIGN MODE which includes multiple worlds, each containing four distinct levels with more than one screen each, and several additional gamemodes. Furthering their usage of proprietary chips, Pumpkin Light 2 offers vibrant graphics, varied palettes, and a larger number of sprites than the standard cartridge could store. Using the tools we developed last year to restore Pumpkin Light, we were able to quickly reverse-engineer this game's code and provide a fully faithful recreation achievable by most popular emulators.
Pumpkin Light 2's story largely follows the same structure as that of the first game: Pam and Jam, two ghosts from Ghost-Land, sneak into Human-Land (formerly "the land of the humans", now written as 人の国, or "People's Land") under the nose of Death (Japanese: 死神 , "the Grim Reaper") to celebrate Halloween. When Death notices their absence once again, he sends a larger army of reanimated soldiers and mind-controlled creatures to subdue them and bring them back home. However, instead of simply visiting graveyards and lighting pumpkins therein, Pam and Jam have this time decided to travel to a variety of locations they find frightening or filled with pumpkins, including a pumpkin patch (World 2) and crumbling ruins (World 4). Because of the game's introduction of a "story" mode, the infinite nature of Pumpkin Light has been foregone, effectively removing any concerns of a kill screen.
Pumpkin Light 2 was followed by two sequels: Pam & Jam's Pumpkin Land for the Game Boy in 1993, and Pam & Jam's Pumpkin Light 3 (simply titled Super Pumpkin Light in the North America and PAL regions) for the Super Nintendo/Famicom in 1994. At this time, it is unknown if there are any more entries in the Pumpkin Light series of Pam & Jam games; as for the NES/FDS, Pumpkin Light 2 was the second-to-last Pam & Jam entry released for these systems, followed only by Pam & Jam's Ghostly Adventure in 1993.
