The Humber STEM Event 2023 was more than just workshop collaboration; it was a celebration of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Bringing together hundreds of children from the East Riding and Hull areas, this event aimed to ignite the passion for STEM in young minds while fostering a network of STEM contacts for primary schools.
Why the Humber STEM Event?
The primary goal of the Humber STEM Event was to spark an interest in STEM fields among children and create a supportive network for schools. Enginuity-commissioned research highlights a significant gap: only 30% of STEM teachers regularly include career information in their lessons. Many teachers (41%) feel they lack sufficient knowledge about STEM careers to effectively inform their students. Moreover, STEM professionals often hesitate to present their work to young children.
Together, we’ve worked alongside professionals to build a bespoke experience for professionals to engage with primary-level students. This effort ensures that the content delivered is accessible and engaging for young learners.
Addressing Early Disengagement
Children’s experiences of ‘ability’ are deeply individual, and a perceived difficulty in learning can negatively impact their self-esteem as early as four years old. The primary event sought to engage with children aged 9-10 before reengaging learners prior to choosing GCSEs – aged 13-14 years old. The Humber STEM Event aims to tackle this issue head-on, helping children by encouraging children and young adults to retain their options and stay engaged in their education.
What did Humber STEM Event look like in 2023?
In 2023, we expanded our event to two days: one day dedicated to up to 600 primary school children and another day for 350 secondary school students. Held at Craven Park, the event provided a diverse range of experiences designed to show the real-world applications of science and introduce students to STEM professionals who could guide and inspire them.
Promoting Diversity in STEM
One of our key objectives was to emphasise the importance of diversity in STEM fields. We focused on representing underrepresented groups, such as disadvantaged, women and BAME individuals, in STEM careers. This representation is crucial for inspiring all children to see themselves in these roles.
Impact and Outcomes
The data we collected from the event was incredibly encouraging:
Educators: The event provided valuable professional development opportunities. Teachers had meaningful conversations with STEM professionals, enhancing their understanding and ability to discuss STEM careers with their students.
Companies: Participating companies received feedback that prompted them to adjust their activities to be more effective in future events. This willingness to reflect and adapt shows a commitment to making a lasting impact on future generations.
Students: The impact on students was profound:
96% of attendees reported learning more about STEM.
89.1% felt inspired to continue their STEM education.
96.9% stated that the event positively impacted their outlook on STEM.
594 students expressed a desire to work for the companies they interacted with during the event.
The Humber STEM Event 2023 was a resounding success, not just in terms of participation, but in its lasting impact on the students, educators and professionals involved.
By continuing to bridge the gap between education and the STEM industry, we aim to nurture the next generation of innovators, thinkers and problem-solvers.
