Cernunnos, The Lord of the Stags, is a majestic and ancient stag who guards the sacred Stone Circle deep within the forest. He is a figure of immense power and wisdom, a fully regal stag with antlers that seem to brush the sky itself. His form is entirely stag-like, yet imbued with a mystical presence that makes him more than just a creature of the forest—he is a spirit of the wild, an embodiment of nature's enduring strength and resilience.
Cernunnos is deeply tied to the land, and it is said that wherever his hooves tread, life springs forth in his wake. He roams the forest with silent grace, his vast antlers covered in moss, vines, and tiny glowing orbs that seem to reflect the stars above. His eyes, ancient and wise, gleam with the knowledge of all living things, from the smallest plants to the grandest trees. His presence is a protective force, and the wolves speak of him in hushed tones, revering him as the eternal guardian of the Moonshadow Circle.
One of the most important events in Cernunnos' story is when he was awarded the Crown of Antlers—a title and adornment that forever marks his role as protector of the forest. This crown is not just the physical antlers placed upon his head but a sacred recognition of his nature and purpose.
Long ago, before Cernunnos bore his majestic antlers, he was known simply as the Guardian of the Grove. His task was to protect the sacred lands around the Stone Circle and ensure harmony between all creatures of the forest.
One year, during the height of autumn, the forest faced a great drought. The Silver River that once shimmered with life had receded, and the animals grew weak and thirsty. The forest, usually teeming with life, began to wither. Without the river’s nourishment, the sacred trees started to lose their leaves, including the mighty First Tree, whose roots connected the forest to the heavens and the earth.
Seeing the despair around him, Cernunnos set out on a journey deep into the hidden realms of the earth. He ventured beneath the roots of the First Tree, far into the dark underworld where ancient spirits of nature dwelled. There, he encountered the Earth Mother, who was the source of all life and water.
The Earth Mother told Cernunnos that in order to restore the forest’s vitality, he must offer something of great personal value—something that represented his own connection to the earth and all its creatures. Without hesitation, Cernunnos offered his own life force, knowing that without water, the forest and all who lived within it would perish.
Moved by his selfless act, the Earth Mother spared him but transformed his sacrifice into a gift. His head was crowned with a magnificent set of antlers, symbolizing his bond with the land, the cycle of life, and his role as a protector of the forest. The antlers also channelled the power of the Earth Mother herself, allowing him to call forth the rains and restore balance to the forest.
When Cernunnos returned to the forest, the rains began to fall, the Silver River once again gleamed with life, and the First Tree stood strong and full of leaves. From that day forward, Cernunnos wore his antlers with pride, a symbol of his enduring connection to the forest and his role as its eternal guardian. The animals of the forest revered him, not just as the Lord of the Stags, but as a being of profound wisdom and sacrifice, forever tied to the cycles of nature.
Cernunnos lives around the Moonshadow Circle, often seen near the ancient trees and groves that surround the area. The First Tree, the oldest and most revered of all the trees in the forest, is closely connected to him. On nights when the moon is full, his antlers glow with a soft light, and it is said that those who see him during these times will be blessed with the wisdom of the forest.
Though Cernunnos does not speak in the way of wolves, his presence is felt deeply, and his protection is known by all. The wolves believe that when they perform their ceremonies in the Stone Circle, Cernunnos watches over them, ensuring that the balance between the forest, the moon, and the spirit world remains unbroken. His Crown of Antlers is a reminder of his sacred duty—a crown not given but earned through his deep and enduring bond with the land and all its creatures.
