What YouTube Can Do For You

This is a contribution from a patient.

To be clear: I am not a doctor or any related professional.

We are going to talk about YouTube. On and off, I have used YouTube videos for reasons I will go into here. I struggle with MS. ("The gift that keeps on taking." I stole that from Micheal J. Fox, fair and square.)

In many cases when I need an explanation or example I can find a related video.  Where you see blue italics under a video that is my note.

“Be decisive. Right or wrong, make a decision. The road of life is paved with flat squirrels who couldn't make a decision.” —Unknown

Here is a trio of stocking-dressing videos. My starting search was "how to put on compression stockings." Of course, if you say "fast" and "easy" you get more attention, just like how McDonald's didn't call them "Sad Meals." 😉

using hands only, leg over knee, have used the technique

*Note: rubber gloves are not mandatory; if recommended for expensive, prescription stockings, buy a pair at your grocery store

using a wireframe donner, never used, but with enough mobility, might be good

new Scrabble® words — you 'don' and 'doff' your socks; so, don donning donner; doff → doffing → doffer

used one of these, good aid for stockings

When the subject turned to the topic of pain management through meditation I started by reading and watching Jon Kabat-Zinn. He (literally) wrote the book.

Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD – Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief (Audio)

And then I found some other pain and grief videos. The YouTube world is yours to look for your selections to keep in a playlist. Pain relief is a sub-set of all forms of meditation. Meditation for mourning is for short-term and chronic patients dealing with major shifts in their bodies.

You know how people say, "cross that bridge when..." or "...that's just a bridge too far?" My MS has pushed me to my next "bridge too far" over and over again. 'I don't need help' becomes 'I need some help' to 'Well, this needs massive help' and ultimately 'I must find ways to avoid needing this ever again.' Everyone living with me (my wife, our son) has to face the same bridge.

I just watched this. If you have MS or another chronic condition or care for someone who does, this video is inspirational *A F*

🥲

You can find many explanations not in manufacturer manuals and seeing with your own eyes ("show, don't tell") can be more helpful. Life with a chronic condition can be a little less scary, less difficult, and less isolated.

NEVER EAT THIS FRUIT!

A warning about YouTube content: just like the rest of the internet, YouTube is filled with lies and the liars that tell them. I was once presented with two 'click-bait' ads side by side, reproduced to my ability to the left and right. Can you fight the urge to click on one or both ads? Click. Bait.

ALWAYS EAT THIS FRUIT!

I wish you the best of searching forever and forever, but you need to keep your wits about you.
