The Grammy Award for Best New Artist was originally awarded to Milli Vanilli. However, on November 20, 1990, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences revoked the award[3][4][5] after producer Frank Farian admitted the duo did not sing at all on their album, Girl You Know It's True.[6] As of the 2021 ceremony, this is the only time where a Grammy has been revoked.

Mildred Virginia Jackson (born July 15, 1944)[4][2] is an American R&B and soul recording artist. Beginning her career in the early 1960s, three of Jackson's albums have been certified gold by the RIAA for over 500,000 copies sold. Jackson's songs often include long spoken sections, sometimes humorous, sometimes sexually explicit. She recorded songs in an R&B, disco, or dance-music style and occasionally in a country style.[citation needed]

"I just talked to the audience because I was nervous," Jackson said. "Then my label (Spring) wanted to record it like I was doing it live. It was longer than a three-minute single, but not quite a whole album side so I said, 'We need to keep this story going.'"

Jackson's recording career reportedly began on a dare to enter a 1964 talent contest at Harlem nightclub Smalls Paradise, which she won.[9] Although she first recorded for MGM Records in 1970, she soon left and began a long association with New York-based Spring Records. Working with the label's in-house producer, Raeford Gerald, her first single to chart was 1971's deceptively titled "A Child of God (It's Hard to Believe)," which reached number 22 on the R&B chart. In 1972, Jackson had her first R&B top ten single with the follow-up, "Ask Me What You Want",[10] which also reached the pop top 30, then "My Man, A Sweet Man" reached No. 7 R&B[10] and No. 50 on the UK Singles Chart;[11] all three songs were co-written by Jackson."My Man, A Sweet Man" was a northern soul[12] hit record in the UK as was her 1976 recording "A House for Sale".[13] The following year brought her third US R&B top ten hit, "It Hurts So Good," which made No. 3 on the R&B chart[10] and No. 24 on the US Billboard Hot 100 pop chart. The single was featured on the album of the same name and in the blaxploitation film Cleopatra Jones.[10]

In 1974, she released the album Caught Up, which introduced her innovative style of raunchy spoken words.[10] The featured release was her version of Luther Ingram's million-seller, "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right",[10] for which she received a Grammy nomination. By now, she had switched producers to work only with Brad Shapiro, who had been involved with "It Hurts So Good" and "Love Doctor". Working at Muscle Shoals Studio in Alabama with the renowned Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, she continued to record most of her material for Spring there, including the follow-up album, Still Caught Up.[10] Over the next ten years, Jackson had a string of successful albums and numerous R&B chart entries, the biggest being her 1977 version of Merle Haggard's country hit "If We're Not Back in Love By Monday". That single was followed by many more, including her version of the Boney M. song, the disco single, "Never Change Lovers in the Middle of The Night." This single peaked at No. 33 on the Billboard R&B chart in 1979.

Jackson recorded an album in 1979 with Isaac Hayes called Royal Rappin's and the same year saw her release a double album, Live and Uncensored, recorded in concert at Los Angeles venue, The Roxy and Live and Outrageous at Atlanta's Mr. V's Figure8. Jackson also formed and produced the group Facts of Life. They had a major hit in 1976 with "Sometimes" (No. 3 R&B, No. 31 Pop). Jackson found herself without a label when Spring closed down in 1984, but in 1986, she signed with Jive Records in a deal that produced four albums and resulted in further R&B top ten hits with "Hot! Wild! Unrestricted! Crazy Love" and "Love Is a Dangerous Game". She appeared on an Elton John track in 1985, "Act of War", which was a top 40 hit in the UK, but failed to chart in the US.[10] In 1991, she wrote, produced and starred in the successful touring play Young Man, Older Woman, based on her album of the same title for Jive. On November 24, 1994, Jackson appeared in the Thanksgiving episode "Feast or Famine" of Martin as Florine. In 2000, her voice featured in "Am I Wrong" by Etienne de Crcy, sampled from her performance in "(If Loving You Is Wrong) I Don't Want to Be Right".

Jackson has frequently appeared on "worst ever" lists for her album covers. E.S.P. (Extra Sexual Persuasion) features Jackson peering into a crystal ball that accentuates her cleavage; Back to the S**t! depicts Jackson sitting on a toilet where it is implied she is defecating.[14][15]

Scott was born in Savannah on the coast of Georgia. She first sang gospel, before becoming a jazz singer. After moving to New York, she was enticed to move to Detroit by The Temptations, and she remains in Detroit to this day.[2]

Despite being universally known as not a good singer (but one hell of a performer, you can't deny her that), she's had a fair amount of hits and surprisingly remains quite popular still to this day (thanks to her Vegas residency and On the Floor being a mega smash & reviving her singing career; over 14 million streams on Spotify this month alone which is higher than Madonna).

It would have been difficult to have listened to the news over the last few weeks without knowing something about the pop duo MilliVanilli. In 1989 they won a Grammy for Best New Artist. They were so popular that they sold 7 million albums. An instant success!Newsweek (11/26/90) said they "boasted they were better than Elvis." Now we know that they did not sing a single note on their hitrecord. They lip-synced the whole thing. To see them perform, you would think they were singing, when, in reality, they were onlymoving their lips as someone else sang. Their world came crashing down on them when this was known. I rather suspect it has affectedthe entire pop music scene. Are there other groups like them out there?

For instance, many folks put on a major production about how much they love Jesus Christ. Theirs is a mighty devotion to him in everyway. If you don't think so, just ask them. They undertake mighty programs to convince the world that they are serving God. Theirmarketing scheme is so effective that they raise literally millions and billions of dollars (2 Pet. 2:3). Some even receive religious"Grammys" for their performance. However, a careful examination reveals that the commandments of Jesus are ignored in theseperformances. They teach the false doctrines of salvation by faith only (Jas. 2:24), the impossibility of apostasy (Gal. 5:4), that baptismis unnecessary to salvation (Mk. 16:16), that God approves observance of religious holidays like Christmas and Easter (Gal. 4:10-11),while ignoring the weekly observance of the Lord's Supper (Acts 20:7), etc. It's a great performance but it is a religious phony. Jesusgave commandments concerning these things but those commandments are being ignored! Still, these religious Milli Vanilli's want us tobelieve that they love the Lord. Jesus said, "Ifye love me, keep my commandments. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them,he is it that loveth me. . . If a man love me, he will keep my words. . . He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings" (Jn.14:15,21,23,24).

Howell, a Washington, D.C., native who played drums and sang in long-gone 14th Street clubs, came to Europe with Pickett in 1966 and never really left. Along with another transplanted American musician, John Davis, Howell provided the vocals that propelled Milli Vanilli to album sales of more than 7 million and a Grammy Award as Best New Artist of 1989.

Howell, Davis and the other members of the new band appeared with Farian at the producer's studio in Rosbach, near Frankfurt. Farian declared the group's album, to be released in January, to have a "really Milli Vanilli sound," and plans were announced for concerts in New York, London, Paris and Munich followed by, if things go well, an extended world tour.

That is not to say the new group will completely lack theatrics. The lineup includes two young, attractive American singers, who both live in Germany. Gina Mohammed, 18, provided backup vocals on the first Milli Vanilli album and will assume a more prominent role. She was brought into the Farian fold at age 14 by her mother, a U.S. Army employee in Germany who worked with the producer as a gospel singer.
