Additional foster resources

Thanks to partnerships with other nonprofits throughout Washington and the U.S., TGP is proud to offer the following resources to our foster families:

Founded in 2016, Fear Free provides online and in-person education to veterinary professionals, the pet professional community, and pet owners. Their mission is to prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress in pets by inspiring and educating the people who care for them.

The Fear Free Shelters Program is designed specifically for employees or volunteers working with pets in shelters or foster care. In it, you’ll learn how to reduce negative emotional reactions, including fear, anxiety, stress, and frustration, which often manifest in animals adapting to a new environment. TGP highly recommends that all our fosters participate in the Fear Free Shelter Training Program; contact us for registration details.

Please note that we will only place certain, vulnerable pets (those with separation anxiety and other issues) with volunteers who have completed the training.

Best Friends is a leading national animal welfare association dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. Best Friends Vet Access (BFVA) is a mobile app that allows fosters to call, video conference or text chat a veterinarian 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

BFVA access has recently been expanded to volunteer foster families nationwide, including those who foster through TGP. BFVA vets can advise on medical, nutritional, and even behavioral issues; when contacted, vets will advise if the issue can be handled at home, requires an in-person vet visit, or if the foster should seek emergency veterinary assistance. TGP will provide more details on how to use this service after a foster animal is placed in your home.

Like TGP, the Doney Coe Pet Clinic is a volunteer-run Seattle organization. By providing veterinary care to the pets of homeless and qualifying low-income residents of the Seattle area, the clinic helps make life better for people and the animals they love and depend on for companionship. In addition to on-site services, the Doney Coe Pet Clinic also provides referrals to partner clinics in cases where emergency and critical care is necessary.

Many TGP clients are also served by the Doney Coe Pet Clinic, and emergency veterinary care over the course of a foster placement will generally be handled through a referral from Doney Coe. Visit the Doney Coe Pet Clinic’s website to learn more, and refer to TGP’s foster handbook for details on emergency vet services.

Seattle Veterinary Outreach (SVO) is an innovative, scalable community outreach designed to address the pressing need for mobile veterinary services for pets owned by the homeless and low-income in Seattle.

Seattle Veterinary Outreach recognizes the importance of the love people share with their pets-it is apparent on the face of every pet and person that enters our clinic. It is our joy and honor to support these underserved and disenfranchised individuals by providing veterinary care for their pets. In becoming a witness to the human-animal bond they share, and by loving their pet with them, SVO becomes a trusted resource for pet owners in need. It is this bond of trust that allows us to become a partner walking by their side as they access community resources and support that benefits both people and pets.

Seattle Humane is the Puget Sound’s leader in animal adoption, education and welfare. Their top priority is to connect animals in need of rescue with the people who will love them. Through our outreach, advocacy, and services they strive to ensure that animal companionship is accessible to all. Seattle Humane promotes the human-animal bond by saving and serving pets in need, regardless of age, ability, circumstance or geography.

The Seattle Animal Shelter fosters safe, healthy and caring relationships between people and animals in our community.
