In the 1960s, colorful Peruvian fishing boats returned to shore each day heavy with thousands of anchovies. On larger boats the anchovies could be put in a hold below deck. On smaller boats, the fishermen, nets, and anchovies were on deck together and seabirds soared above, looking for a snack. Fish are very important to the coastal Peruvians because the climate is dry and it's hard to farm the land.

The Peruvian fishermen noticed that warmer water and tropical fish had appeared. The skies were cloudy and the air was humid instead of dry. This had happened before, every few years. Because it was a bit like the weather that would happen around Christmas, at the start of Southern Hemisphere summer, they called it El Nio, the child, in honor of Christmas.

Living in the cool, nutrient-rich water of the Pacific off the west coast of South America, Peruvian anchovies are small and gray with scales that shimmer. Like all fish, anchovies hatch from eggs. The yolks provide the young fish with some nutrition, but not much. When the fish are young they must find food quickly to survive.

The map above shows the sea surface temperatures during an El Nio event. The color scale shows how temperatures compare to average sea surface temperature (in degrees Celcius). Yellow and red colors indicate warmer waters in the area where Peruvian fishermen look for anchovies. Those warmer ocean temperatures spread across the Pacific during El Nio.

In the 1960s and early 1970s Peru was the biggest fishing nation in the world. In 1970, Peruvian fishermen caught nearly 10 million metric tons of anchovies. In 1971 they caught even more. Then, in 1972, there were no anchovies to be found.

Resiliency is the ability to survive a disaster and recover. Overfishing in the 1960s had decreased the resiliency of the anchovies. When El Nio hit in 1972, the fish were less able to survive. Since then, the number of anchovies has increased slowly, but there still are not as many of them as there used to be.

Fish and commercially available fish oil preparations are rich sources of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are the most important fatty acids in fish oil. Following dietary intake, these fatty acids get incorporated into the cell membrane phospholipids throughout the body, especially in the heart and brain. They play an important role in early brain development during infancy, and have also been shown to be of benefit in dementia, depression, and other neuropsychiatric disorders. Early epidemiologic studies show an inverse relationship between fish consumption and the risk of coronary heart disease. This led to the identification of the cardioprotective role of these marine-derived fatty acids. Many experimental studies and some clinical trials have documented the benefits of fish oil supplementation in decreasing the incidence and progression of atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, heart failure, arrhythmias, and stroke. Possible mechanisms include reduction in triglycerides, alteration in membrane fluidity, modulation of cardiac ion channels, and anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, and anti-arrhythmic effects. Fish oil supplements are generally safe, and the risk of toxicity with methylmercury, an environmental toxin found in fish, is minimal. Current guidelines recommend the consumption of either one to two servings of oily fish per week or daily fish oil supplements (around 1 g of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids per day) in adults. However, recent large-scale studies have failed to demonstrate any benefit of fish oil supplements on cardiovascular outcomes and mortality. Here, we review the different trials that evaluated the role of fish oil in cardiovascular diseases.

Intrigued with the concept of using fish leather for her jewelry, we started to chat about how she came to use it in her designs. The story was fascinating and it involved a few serendipitous moments, a recent trip to Iceland, and an exciting new line that she was about to launch. Meredith and her jewelry were so inspirational, I wanted to share her story and her designs with our readers.

About nine years ago, on a Friday afternoon at 5:30 pm, Meredith received a call from a salesman at a fish leather tannery in Canada. Not only was it a bad time to call, she said, but his sales pitch was awful, so she hung up and forgot about it. A year passed and he called again. Same day, same time, same bad sales pitch, same reaction from Meredith.

Then three years went by and her business partner had left and she had a new baby. Meredith moved everything into her home to regroup and decide on the direction to take her business. She knew she wanted to shake things up and be different. All of a sudden, she remembered those calls from the salesman and his fish leather and searched for the company online.

A few years later, she realized the tannery she had been sourcing from in Canada was no longer in operation and had been selling from their inventory, so she had to start looking for a new supplier. After extensive research, Meredith now works with a tannery in Iceland, Atlantic Leather, which was named the #1 tannery in Europe. She recently visited their facility in Iceland to learn more about the process of making the leather. She also thought this visit was important to tell the story about fish leather and brought back stunning images (thanks to her her photographer, Chris M. Rogers) of both Iceland and her jewelry with the natural beauty of Iceland as the backdrop.

The Bonneville Dam, which spans the Columbia River between the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington, has affected fish populations, but now organizations are attempting to lessen its impact on the environment.

At all of the government-owned dams (excluding Chief Joseph and Grand Coulee) fish ladders were constructed so that the adult salmon could bypass the structures and continue upstream to spawn. The fish ladders are like stair steps that water flows down, creating a series of shallow waterfalls. While dams often prove impassable for the fish, the salmon are able to get upstream using these fish ladders.

The bruiser of Mahi took line that seemed forever, and I got a small amount back when it paused. The battle continued back and forth and back and forth until I started to gain on the massive fish. I slowly got it to the boat but as soon as the fish saw the boat it awakened in a fury and took more line out.

My back and arm yelling at me in pain. I shouldered through. Slowly gaining the line I lost, I reached the leader. Our mate, who spoke fishing english, waved at me to slow the fight. He began slowly hand reeling the line in very cautiously. Like threading a needle he ever so gently pulled the line to his reach. The fish sluggishly made its way to the pointed gaff and the mate with all his might pulled in the massive Mahi Mahi. The fish was caught and my personal best Mahi Mahi posed with me in the boat.

Granted now, you do take your place in a line, car after car after pickup and jeep, on the gravel road that leads into the hatchery, and wait your turn. It is not exactly a wilderness experience. But a great one. Camaraderie abounds. Each person receiving an allotment of salmon must have a fishing licence, and your take is based on the count of heads, both human and fish.

I'm rather new to the game but in my efforts to make large quantities of Narcotics, I turned to fishing. I'm currently based on the island right next to the red pillar and there are some nice shallow streams on my island.

The dams have made trouble for the river's ecosystem, especially the Columbia's salmon. Jeff Hickman is a former organizer for the Sierra Club, an environmental organization. He says the area was once very healthy. "It had the largest population of fish on the planet," Hickman says.

The Columbia was once a fast-moving waterway, but the dams broke it into a handful of reservoirs with slower currents and warmer water. Hickman says the warmer temperature puts more stress on migrating fish. It also creates a more suitable environment for predators that eat those fish.

The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission is an organization that represents the region's Native American population. Bob Heinith is their water program coordinator. According to Heinith, the dams have destroyed fish habitats. He says dams have cut off access to upstream areas, which has destroyed about two-thirds of the overall habitat for fish. 006ab0faaa
