In 1914, aliens known as Mondoshawans meet their human contact, a priest of a secret order, at an ancient Egyptian temple. They take the only weapon capable of defeating a great evil that appears every five thousand years, promising to protect it and return it before the great evil's re-emergence. The weapon consists of the four classical elements, as four engraved stones, plus a sarcophagus containing a "fifth element".

The original name of the character Ruby Rhod was Loc Rhod, which appears both in the original script and in the novel adapted from the film.[49] Hayward speculated that the name change was a play on data in the periodic table. Rubidium is the first of the period 5 elements, and exactly halfway along that row is the element rhodium. Using the first half of each element yields "Rubi Rhod".[50] Others have speculated this name is a play on the character's gender-bending persona, with a feminine first name and phallic surname.[10] Prince was cast to portray Rhod but could not schedule filming around his touring dates.[51] Chris Tucker and Jamie Foxx were each considered for the role; Besson liked Foxx but felt that Tucker's smaller body suited the character better.[52]

In The Fifth Element, some kind of music is playing during about ninety percent of the film; Besson's films have been described as "intrinsically musical".[61][62] The score was composed by ric Serra. He relies chiefly on the use of orchestral textures, such as the oboe and strings heard as the surgeons prepare to regenerate Leeloo, and the pizzicato as she is reconstructed. Serra also used many non-French influences, such as the Stalinist fanfare heard before the spaceport sequence, the reggae piece played in preparation for the flight, and the hula music that greets the passengers as they arrive in Fhloston.[63] More conventional scoring techniques are present in the leitmotif that first sounds when professor Pacoli mentions the fifth element, the militaristic snares as the warship prepares to attack the dark planet, and the Mahlerian funereal piece heard when Leeloo learns about war.[63] The music used for the taxicab chase scene, titled "Alech Taadi" by Algerian performer Khaled,[64][65] did not appear on the film soundtrack but is available on Khaled's album N'ssi N'ssi.[66]

The film also received reviews that criticized its overblown style. Todd McCarthy of Variety wrote, "A largely misfired European attempt to make an American-style sci-fi spectacular, The Fifth Element consists of a hodgepodge of elements that don't comfortably coalesce."[77] David Edelstein of Slate said, "It may or may not be the worst movie ever made, but it is one of the most unhinged."[5]

While the Fifth Element was to be larger than its individual elements, each element had to be a strong standalone feature in itself: the team identified and came to understand each element, their stories, and how to feature them in a highly original way without concealing mechanical features.

After defining the four elements, the next step was the design of the Fifth Element, the hub in which the pods are housed. The challenge was to create an archetypical UFO of the 1950-60s, but without concealing any of the four elements.

Welcome to Fifth Element, the finest recreational dispensary in Michigan. You may have heard there are four classical elements for life, but here at Fifth Element, we believe the Earth has graciously provided us with another.

The Chinese count wood from trees as the fifth element, recognizing them as our barometers of weather, just like my grandfather with his fir cones. They relate to the changing of the seasons; we tell the time of year by them. Who is in any doubt that autumn has arrived in the Northern hemisphere when they take a walk in a wood, observing the myriad changing colors of the leaves?

The movie begins in "Egypt, 1914,'' that birthplace not only of civilizations but of countless horror and occult films. Inside an ancient tomb, scientists gather at the site of an event that took place (we learn) centuries earlier. Four crucial stones, representing the four elements, had been kept here until a spaceship, looking something like a hairy aerodynamic pineapple, arrived to take them away, one of its alien beings intoning in an electronically lowered voice, "Priest, you have served us well. But war is coming. The stones are not safe on Earth anymore.'' Deep portentous opening omens almost invariably degenerate into action sequences. But "The Fifth Element'' cuts quickly to another extraordinary scene, New York City in the mid-23rd century. The futuristic metropolis, constructed at enormous cost with big, detailed models and effects, is wondrous to behold. It looks like Flash Gordon crossed with those old Popular Mechanics covers about the flying automobiles of the future. Towers climb to the skies, but living conditions are grungy, and most people live in tiny modular cells where all the comforts of home are within arm's reach.

Military-industrial types want to employ Leeloo for their own ends; they observe her from behind unbreakable glass. She breaks the glass, grabs a general's privates, and dives through what looks like a wall of golden crumpled aluminum foil, racing outside to a ledge high in the clouds. She leaps, but is saved from dashing her genes out on the pavements far below by crashing through the roof of a taxi driven by Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), who seems to have been ported directly here from the cab in "Pulp Fiction." Leeloo holds unimaginable powers, but she needs help, and Korben befriends her. Soon the future of the universe is in their hands, as the movie unfolds the rest of the story. The "fifth element'' of the title, we learn, is the life force itself--that which animates the inanimate (the other four elements are earth, air, fire and water). Leeloo represents this element. Arrayed against her is a vast anti-life force, a sort of black hole of death. Every 5,000 years, a portal opens between the universes where these two forces live; the evil force can slip through unless the five elements are correctly deployed against it. The pulsating fireball in space is the physical manifestation of the dark force.

Knowledge is considered by many, to be one of the most important elements of hip-hop. Be it through graffiti or b-boying/b-girling, DJing or MCing, knowledge is what gives the artist the ability to understand, explore, and express their identity in ways that make hip-hop a powerful medium for social change.

By embedding socio-political and socio-economic commentary in all its elements, hip-hop advocates for, and empowers, marginalized groups and communities while educating those outside of them, and in so doing, building bridges between many worlds. Hence its widespread appeal and ability to connect with people regardless of their race, religion, culture, sexuality, gender, and all those other little boxes we use to divide and separate ourselves.

With my cast the progress was rather arduous, but after several weeks I ended up with a simple bench and cabinet design. The removable rear seats in the element also make it possible to have either bench or cabinet and a third seat. My vision of a modular, removable camper, with no alteration of the car itself, was taking shape.

In fact, during that period we really worked hard to sort of understand that and replicate reality, and you had to fight to do that with scale and physical phenomena with miniatures, and then you had to sort of fight to do that with lighting, digital lighting and making lighting tools and animation to make the digital effects work and digital elements work. So it was really nice to have them inform each other.

For my project, I wanted to recreate the element stones that were used to kill the 'evil' in the weapon chamber in Egypt. It was evident that the movie versions were made out of polystyrene, but I wanted mine to be a bit more durable and long lasting, and so I ended up manufacturing them out of wood. Also, following my own rules on prop creation, I decided to turn them into functional pillar candle holders that I could use to decorate my dinner table during gatherings, as a conversation piece, or simply as an everyday accent.

There are a lot of variations to the stones, so I opted to take the patters directly from the movie, which I profusely enjoyed watching for the 50th time. The four element stones in order to the image, use four distinct line patterns;

That's it. Next time you have a dinner party, you can set some mood lighting with your element stone candles that will have your guests asking questions. I put my stones outside near my star gazing bench so that I can have a bit of dim light as I look up at the sky.

Physicist Dr Melvin Vopson has already published research suggesting that information has mass and that all elementary particles, the smallest known building blocks of the universe, store information about themselves, similar to the way humans have DNA.

According to the film's storyline, the Earth finds itself in crisis in the year 2259 A.D. The Mondoshawan are on a mission to bring all five elements to Earth when their mothership is shot down over an alien planet by the dreaded Mangalores (realized with excellent alien designs by Nick Dudman). As envisioned by Besson and Stetson, their tiny ZFX 200 fighters make a dynamic dive on the massive Mondoshawan craft, raking its surface with fiery missiles. "We shot the move on the Mondoshawan ship first, then did different moves on the little ZFX 200 fighters," Stetson remembers. "We had two scales for the miniature attackers: a cleaned-up design maquette measuring about 16" long was used for long shots, and a 4' miniature for close-ups.

Mike Bergstrom, who handled the encoding equipment, quickly swapped the head on the production camera with a duplicate encoding head. Goulekas plastered the greenscreen with ping-pong balls for tracking reference points. Meanwhile, Stetson was concerned about the reflective sheen of the diva's costume. "[Makeup artist] Nick Dudman used a material that was very specular and diffractive," Stetson says. "When we looked at the green screen element of the diva in this shiny blue suit, we thought, 'Oh God, what are we going to get out of this?'"
