Because it was, and still is, difficult to control the strength of lye made from wood ash, home soapmaking was a labor of some trial and error. Therefore, many relied on town chandlers, or candlemakers, who also made soap. Chandlers collected cooking and butchering fats from housewives, made soap, and sold it back to the housewives. However, this soap was expensive, and thrifty housekeepers continued making soap at home.

As with so many other things, automation and convenience in soapmaking meant a sacrifice in other areas. Although mass-produced soap is very long-lasting and of consistent quality, scent, form, and color, it has lost something. Any connection to the craft of making soap is removed from commercial soap, right along with the glycerin.

Then the ghost swirl technique challenge taught me that I could use the same regular recipe from before, and decrease the water amount instead to a 40% lye concentration equivalent, which sounds contrary to everything I had learned so far, yet it worked.

That depends on many things. For your first question, I like using a 2:1 solution (33.3% solution), which is one part sodium hydroxide to two parts water. So if you have 500 grams of caustic soda, I would dissolve it in 1000 grams of distilled water. Please note that if you plan on doing this, use high grade alkaline and heat proof bottles, such as polypropylene PP plastic, and that you label them clearly as a caustic and dangerous substance and store them out of reach of children. To your second question, that I cannot answer, because it depends on the soap recipe that you are using. Each oil is different and requires different amounts of sodium hydroxide to turn that particular oil into soap. But as a rough guideline, you use about 130-140 grams of sodium hydroxide for 1000 grams of oils. If you have 500 grams, that will make about 4.5 kg of soap. Also note everything is weighed (in grams or ounces) and not measure in volume. Good luck!

If you have hops (or other herbs) that you would like to scent the soap with try soaking it in oil for a day or two before adding it.This protects the colour and scent through the soapmaking process. Just make sure to weigh the oil you soak it in and use it in your lye calculations.

Or, I like to melt the solids (coconut oil, babassu oil, tallow, cocoa butter, shea butter, etc), then combine them with the liquid oils. This usually warms everything up enough, but if needed you can heat the mixture a little longer until the combined oils reach 90 to 115 degrees F.

Temperature is a subjective, personal preference that varies between soap-makers. Some will only mix at higher temperatures than I list here, while others let everything sit overnight and mix the next morning at room temperature. Both ways are fine to use!

I have been reading everything within my reach to prepare for my soap making chapters of life. Thank you for for sharing your knowledge. Inspiration from your name, my own skin troubles and cleanliness provoke me to take the next step to start sooner than later. Thanks thenerdyfarmwife!

What I used to do, was to put everything in the dishwasher once I poured the mixture into the molds. Eventually, my dishwasher stopped draining correctly, so we got another one. That one shortly broke too. Turned out that I had clogged the pipes with the soap mixture and had to get a plumber in to fix everything. He told me to NEVER put raw soap in my dishwasher/sink again!

Hey I am new at this soap making. I am so nervous with getting started but I have everything I need. When people say use the lye calculator to create your recipe. I was wondering how to you create a recipe and know what kind of oils to use and oz of each. It might be a silly questions but being new at this I have no clue. Thanks!!! e24fc04721
