Black History Month is a time to celebrate the invaluable role Black people have played in the creation and sustainment of the United States, but it is also an apt time to address the current state of Black America and look forward to our Black Future. While we celebrate the achievements of our past, let's also safeguard our futures by healing ourselves and our communities. Black people are contending with a litany of health and social issues. The undervaluation of our lives in the COVID-19 pandemic response and widespread publication of images of violence against Black people, have undoubtedly taken its toll on our communities' mental, emotional, and physical health.
The resources gathered on this site are meant to promote radical healing, care, and wellbeing for Black people. To heal, we have to piece together ourselves and our communities. Additional resources will be added periodically.
My name is Nastacia and like many others I picked up a hobby in 2020 to pass the time and bring myself a little joy. I found making candles to be relaxing and therapeutic and I wanted to share this healing with others. Before the pandemic took over our lives, I'd been contemplating ways that I could meaningfully give back to my community. The pandemic afforded me a little extra time to work towards that. I believe that community is a verb and our belonging to community is defined by the ways in which we serve one another. I knew that I wanted to build a platform centered around health and wellbeing for Black and brown folks. I founded the Empowrd Collective as a way to do just that.
I know that in the grand scheme of things, candles won't bring us good health or wellbeing, but communities need all sorts of services. For now sharing light, love, joy, and encouraging a little bit of self-care is my service offering. Along this journey I will continue to expand and I am looking forward to bringing together a vibrant community of folks who envision a similar future of health and wellbeing for Black and Brown folks.
