In modern-day Japan, a boy named Minoru Kageno aspires to be a mastermind, exerting power from the shadows. During his clandestine training, an unforeseen accident occurs when he gets hit by a truck, leading to his untimely demise. To his surprise, he finds himself reborn in a fantastical realm as Cid Kagenou. Here, he decides to maintain a facade of mediocrity, intentionally avoiding the limelight while secretly nurturing his dream of orchestrating power from behind the scenes.

Although Cid may seem unnaturally obsessed with acting ordinary, this role is significant to becoming the Eminence in Shadow Cid has always desired to be. As in the name, Cid's dream required the shadows to act as the stage for his talents while his everyday life was used as a disguise and alibi for any of his suspicious behavior -- convincing others that even if he was suspicious, Cid would never be connected to Shadow since their personalities were so contrastingly different.

While Cid pursued perfection in his strength, techniques, and magic, he also aspired for a flawless performance as a background character not worth glancing twice at. By deliberately choosing unremarkable side characters -- Skel and Po -- as his friends at school, taking advantage of being born a countryside Baron's son and hiding under his sister's shadow, Cid seamlessly incorporates the details that highlighted how ordinary he was in his daily life to create a personality that was distinctly different from the one he displayed as Shadow -- though he is completely unaware that the dangers he faces in both sides of his life are from the very real Diablos Cult.

Cid doesn't want to be a flashy hero or a dastardly villain. He wants to operate in the shadows and pull the strings of society through wit and cleverness. So, when he's isekai'd to another world armed with magic powers (and an overactive imagination), he forms Shadow Garden, an underground organization that fights an evil cult he totally made up. But while Cid happily roleplays his favorite antihero tropes, little does he know Shadow Garden's recruits treat his every lie as gospel, and worse yet? That "fake" cult is actually real, and they're not happy his power fantasy just impeded their plan to gain ultimate power!

As Cid pretends to be just another average mob character, he recruits members to his (fake) organization Shadow Garden, aiming to take down the mysterious cult who lurks in the shadows.
