Pelagic Camouflage (Transparency): Many open-ocean organisms, such as comb jellies and salps, rely on near-perfect transparency to avoid detection. A Gelatinous Cube applies this same principle in dungeon corridors, its nearly invisible body requiring a DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check to distinguish from the surrounding air and stone.
Passive Predation (External Digestion): Amoebas, slime molds, and many microorganisms engulf prey before dissolving it with digestive enzymes. A Gelatinous Cube scales this strategy to monstrous proportions. When it Engulfs a creature, the victim is surrounded by corrosive cytoplasm, restrained, unable to breathe, and slowly dissolved by powerful acids while being carried inside the cube.
Colonial Organization (Many Cells, One Organism): Organisms such as siphonophores (such as the Portuguese man o' war) appear to be a single animal but are actually colonies of highly specialized individuals functioning as one. A Gelatinous Cube might behave similarly as a unified organism, allowing it to maintain its shape while flowing through confined spaces.
Brainless Intelligence (Distributed Decision-Making): Slime molds possess no brain or nervous system, yet they can solve mazes, optimize nutrient pathways, and retain environmental "memory" through chemical signaling. Likewise, despite its low intelligence score, a Gelatinous Cube instinctively navigates dungeon corridors, avoiding dead ends while efficiently patrolling areas rich in organic matter.
Detritivore Metabolism (Nature's Recycler): Marine detritivores and decomposers recycle dead organic material while helping sequester carbon within ecosystems. A Gelatinous Cube fills an equivalent ecological niche underground, consuming corpses, refuse, and biological waste before reducing them to simple chemical compounds, leaving dungeon passageways remarkably clean.
Endosymbiotic Chemistry (Living Ecosystem): Many transparent marine animals harbor symbiotic algae or bacteria that provide nutrients. The Gelatinous Cube may likewise host microbial endosymbionts within its translucent body, allowing it to survive for long periods between large meals.

Deepstaria Jellyfish (Deepstaria enigmatica).
The Living Analogue: Drifting through the lightless abyss of the deep ocean, the ghostly Deepstaria enigmatica feels less like a jellyfish and more like a living ambush spell given form. Completely translucent and hauntingly cube-shaped, this gelatinous specter can stretch nearly two feet across, vanishing almost entirely into the black waters of the abyssal depths. Unlike most jellyfish, it bears no stinging tentacles and instead uses its entire body as the trap.
Floating silently like an invisible dome from some forgotten undersea realm, it waits for unsuspecting fish or crustaceans to drift into its delicate membrane. The moment prey brushes against the nearly undetectable wall, the creature contracts, cinching shut like a drawstring pouch and sealing the victim inside a transparent, living prison. Escape becomes impossible as pulsing internal canals flood the chamber with digestive enzymes, slowly dissolving the trapped prey within its gelatinous tomb.
A mindless drifting snare of the abyss, it evokes the feeling of a magical trap creature from an ancient dungeon crawl. An unseen devourer that hunts not with claws or venom, but with patience, invisibility, and the cold certainty of the deep.
