Looking at cryptocurrency or stock prices on exchange platforms can feel cluttered and overwhelming. What if you could track all your investments in one place with professional-grade tools? That's exactly what TradingView offers.
Whether you're just starting out in trading or want a cleaner way to monitor your portfolio, understanding basic chart reading is essential. It helps you catch price movements in real-time, understand trend patterns, and make sense of others' technical analysis. Even if you're not planning to become a chart expert, you need reliable tools to track your investments properly.
This guide walks you through TradingView's eight core features that every beginner should know. Best part? Everything covered here is completely free to use.
TradingView stands out as the most comprehensive charting platform available today. It covers virtually every tradable asset - stocks, cryptocurrencies, forex, commodities, and indices. The interface is clean, the charts are customizable, and it syncs seamlessly across all your devices.
Unlike exchange-specific tools that limit you to their listed assets, 👉 TradingView gives you a bird's eye view of global markets in one unified platform. You can compare Bitcoin against the S&P 500, overlay forex pairs with crypto charts, or track emerging market stocks - all without switching tabs.
The platform also supports advanced technical indicators and even allows you to code custom ones. For collaborative traders, there's a built-in community where analysts share their chart setups and market insights.
Head to TradingView's website and create your free account. Your first order of business: customize the interface to your preference.
Initial Setup Steps:
Register and log in - This saves all your settings and configurations automatically
Toggle dark/light mode - Click your user icon in the top right to switch themes. Many traders prefer the light theme for daytime use (and it's more discreet if you're checking markets at work)
Change language - If the site defaults to English and you prefer another language, adjust it from the same user menu
The homepage features two main sections worth exploring:
Editor's Picks shows trading ideas shared by other users. Quality varies widely, especially in cryptocurrency markets where anyone can post. Start by following established analysts rather than diving into random posts.
Market Summary provides a snapshot of global financial markets - indices, currencies, futures, bonds, and of course, crypto. Since cryptocurrencies don't exist in isolation from traditional finance, checking these summaries helps you understand broader economic trends affecting your investments.
To access the actual charts, click the "Chart" button in the navigation menu.
Trading pairs might seem basic, but they're the foundation of accurate chart reading. Located in the top-left corner of the chart screen, this selector determines exactly what price relationship you're viewing.
Trading Pair Logic:
The format follows "Asset A / Asset B" - meaning how much Asset A costs in terms of Asset B. The more important currency always goes on the right. Importance ranks as: fiat currency > stablecoin > market cap.
Common examples: USDT/TWD, BTC/USDT, ETH/BTC
To find Bitcoin against USDT, search "BTCUSDT" (no slash needed). The platform will list this pair from multiple exchanges. Select the exchange you actually trade on, or default to Binance if yours isn't listed - Binance typically has the most reliable data due to trading volume.
For futures contracts, you'll see additional date indicators or "PERP" for perpetual contracts.
Constantly searching for trading pairs gets tedious fast. TradingView's watchlist feature solves this by keeping your frequently-viewed assets just one click away.
Click the list icon in the top-right toolbar. Hit the "+" button to open the asset search dialog. Type the trading pair you want, then click the "+" next to it in the results. It'll appear in your "My Watchlist" panel.
Now you can switch between charts instantly by clicking any item in your list. The watchlist also shows real-time price updates for all your tracked assets.
Pro Tips:
Right-click any item to flag it with a colored marker - super helpful when tracking many assets
Sort by percentage change to quickly spot which assets are moving the most
To remove items, hover over them and click the "X" that appears
The free version allows one custom watchlist. Upgrading unlocks the ability to create multiple lists for different strategies or asset classes.
Every candlestick on a chart represents price action over a specific time period - called a "timeframe." TradingView lets you view anything from one-minute intervals to monthly candles.
The timeframe selector sits in the top toolbar. Click it to see options ranging from seconds to months. Select your preferred timeframe and the chart refreshes instantly.
Star your most-used timeframes to add them as quick-access buttons in the toolbar. This saves you from opening the dropdown menu every time.
Next to the timeframe selector is the chart style menu. While traditional candlesticks work for most people, you have options like line charts, Heikin-Ashi, hollow candles, and more. Hollow candles provide stronger visual contrast between up and down moves - helpful if you have any color vision difficulties.
The free version covers all standard timeframes from 1-minute to monthly. Premium accounts unlock second-level charts and custom interval options.
Understanding the chart axes is straightforward: the vertical axis shows price, the horizontal axis shows time.
Adjusting the Price Axis:
Method 1 - As you drag the chart left or right, TradingView auto-scales the price axis to fit the visible candles perfectly.
Method 2 - Click and drag the price axis itself up or down to zoom manually. Once you do this, auto-scaling disables and you control all zoom movements freely. Double-click the axis to re-enable auto-fit.
Adjusting the Time Axis:
Method 1 - Scroll your mouse wheel while hovering over the chart to zoom in or out on time.
Method 2 - Click and drag the time axis left or right to achieve the same effect. Double-clicking resets to the default scale and jumps to the most recent candles.
These zoom controls let you examine specific price ranges in detail or pull back for a bigger-picture view. 👉 Master these navigation basics and you'll move around charts as smoothly as professional traders using TradingView's platform.
The left toolbar contains various drawing and measurement tools. These aren't just for decoration - they're essential for marking support levels, resistance zones, and trend lines.
The Tools Break Down Into Four Categories:
Cursor Tools - Stick with the default crosshair cursor. As you hover over candles, the top of the chart displays exact OHLC (open, high, low, close) values for that specific bar.
Drawing Tools - Lines, shapes, arrows, and more for marking up your charts. Click any tool and test it out - they're intuitive. These really shine when analyzing support and resistance levels or identifying chart patterns.
Measurement Tools - This is the critical one, even for non-technical traders. Select the measurement tool and drag across any chart section. TradingView displays:
Point change and percentage move
Number of candlesticks in the range
Time duration covered
Volume during the period
Dragging upward shows positive percentages, downward shows negative - perfect for calculating potential profit or loss on trades.
Drawing Assistance Tools:
Magnet Mode - Your cursor automatically snaps to the nearest OHLC price point, making precise line drawing effortless
Stay in Drawing Mode - Keep using the same tool repeatedly without reselecting it each time
Lock All Drawings - Prevents accidental movement when clicking around the chart
Hide Drawings and Indicators - Temporarily clear all markup to see raw price action, useful during calculations
These tools work together seamlessly. Enable magnet mode while using the measurement tool and you'll get pixel-perfect accuracy on your calculations.
Below the chart, you'll find quick-jump buttons like "1D," "5D," "1M," "YTD," and "ALL." Each instantly scales the chart to show that specific time range. Click "YTD" and you'll see everything from January 1st of the current year to now.
The calendar icon on the far right lets you jump to any specific date. This is invaluable when researching historical events. For example, the famous "March 12, 2020" crash (known as "312" in crypto circles) saw Bitcoin plummet from $7,966 to $3,782 in under 24 hours - a devastating 52% drop that marked the beginning of the COVID-19 market panic.
Type in any date and TradingView takes you straight there, complete with all the price data from that period.
The camera icon in the top-right toolbar captures your current chart view. Unlike regular screenshots, it generates a direct image link you can instantly share with others or save for your records.
Next to it, the "Publish" button lets you share detailed trading ideas with the TradingView community. It works like creating a social media post - you can write analysis, add multiple chart images, and choose whether to make it public or private (link-only access).
Public posts appear in the platform's social feed, which is why you'll find varying quality levels as mentioned earlier. When you're starting out, focus on learning from established analysts rather than trying to parse through every random post.
These eight core features give you everything needed to monitor markets effectively. The best part? They're all available in TradingView's free tier.
Proper investment means staying informed about your holdings. You wouldn't buy a house and never check on it, right? Same principle applies to your portfolio. Even if technical analysis isn't your thing, TradingView serves as an excellent portfolio tracking tool that covers nearly every tradable asset globally - they've even recently added Taiwan OTC stocks.
Remember: learning tools like this takes hands-on practice. Reading about features is one thing, but actually clicking through and testing each function cements the knowledge. Open TradingView in another tab and follow along as you read.
Master these basics first, then you'll be ready for more advanced features like custom indicators, alerts, and trading directly from charts. The fundamentals covered here form the foundation that everything else builds upon.
Start tracking your investments with clarity today - your future self will thank you.
