Robert the Doll[1] is an allegedly haunted doll[2] exhibited at the East Martello Museum in Key West, Florida. Robert was once owned by painter, author, and Key West resident Robert Eugene Otto.

The doll originally belonged to Robert Eugene Otto, an artist described as "eccentric", who belonged to a prominent Key West family. The doll was reportedly manufactured by the Steiff Company of Germany, purchased by Otto's grandfather while on a trip to Germany in 1904, and given to young Otto as a birthday gift. The doll's sailor suit was likely an outfit that Otto wore as a child.[1][3]

The doll remained stored in the Otto family home at 534 Eaton Street in Key West while Otto studied art in New York and Paris. Otto married Annette Parker in Paris on May 3, 1930. The couple returned to the Otto family home in Key West to live there until Otto died in 1974. His wife died two years later.[4][5] After their deaths, the Eaton Street home containing the doll was sold to Myrtle Reuter, who owned it for 20 years[3] until the property was sold to the current owners, who operate it as a guest house.[4]

In 1994, the doll was donated to the East Martello Museum in Key West, Florida, where it became a popular tourist attraction.[6][7] It is annually rotated to the Old Post Office and Customhouse in October.

According to legend, the doll has supernatural abilities that allow it to move, change its facial expressions, and make giggling sounds. Some versions of the legend claim that a young girl of "Bahamian descent" gave Otto the doll as a gift or as "retaliation for a wrongdoing". Other stories claim that the doll moved voodoo figurines around the room, and was "aware of what went on around him". Other legends claim that the doll "vanished" after Otto's house changed ownership a number of times after his death,[5][8] or that young Otto triggered the doll's supernatural powers by blaming his childhood mishaps on the doll. According to local folklore, the doll has caused "car accidents, broken bones, job loss, divorce and a cornucopia of other misfortunes", and museum visitors supposedly experience "post-visit misfortunes" for "failing to respect Robert".[3]

In order to understand the full extent of this, it's important to know Robert's sordid past. Originally given as a gift to Eugene Otto, an author and painter, by his grandfather in 1904, the two were instantly inseparable. It's said that Robert the Doll's outfit was even modeled after one Eugene wore. As a boy, Eugene would often blame the doll for accidents and misgivings, claiming, "Robert told me to do it." Seems like somewhat normal little kid behavior, right?

According to our tour guide, the real trouble started when a woman who worked for the Otto family was fired abruptly without cause. But rather than packing her bags and leaving, she reportedly used voodoo to put a curse on the doll as a form of revenge. And while it may seem pretty far-fetched to some, others believe it actually worked.

Before walking into the museum to get a peek at Robert, the tour guide gave us some strict rules to follow: you must greet and introduce yourself to Robert; if you want to take a photo of him, you must ask first; and you can't leave the museum without saying goodbye. While a bit weird, that all sounded doable to Chris and me, so we did as we were told. After snapping a few photos, we learned about what happens to people who don't follow the rules or poke fun at Robert. A nearby TV showed thousands of letters from people from around the world who experienced terrible luck after rubbing the doll the wrong way.

As a respectful visitor, I thought I was off the hook. I followed the rules and was genuinely interested in learning about him. But boy, was I wrong. I made ONE comment about a grown man carrying around a doll, and my fate was sealed. As soon as I woke up the next day, the bad luck began. First, our flight home was delayed. Then, we were forced to rebook our flight because the plane was too heavy, resulting in us having a five-hour layover and getting transferred to another connecting flight. While both of these things were annoying, I also knew they happen sometimes. It couldn't have been because of a doll, right?

After sending them, we went to bed and promptly called the airlines at 9 a.m. when they opened. And guess what? We were immediately told where our bag was: back in Key West with an airline we didn't fly with. While things were still somewhat up in the air, our luck seemed to completely change as soon as we apologized to Robert. Coincidence? Maybe. But do we regret writing letters to a doll just to be sure? Absolutely not!

To substantiate this, the museum is filled with letters of apology (of which Robert receives about 1-3 a day!), begging the doll for forgiveness in failing to ask permission. They beg for Robert to reverse their luck, but these letters only show the complaint, not the updates as to whether these pleas work.

Back to 2017, I was 14 when I went to Florida with my family for three weeks of beaches, pools, restaurants and local food (the kind of holidays I will never live again), and one evening, I was on Youtube and I was watching a video of Squeezie, my favorite videographer at the time, and in this video, he was telling the well known story of Robert the doll. The story begins at the turn of the last century, when an African maid of the Otto family, rich Floridian aristocrats, gives a doll to their son, Robert. From the beginning, Robert falls in love with his doll and never leaves it, so much so that he changes his name for Eugene in order to name his doll by its real name. But legends quickly circulate about this doll: it is said that the maid practiced voodoo magic and bewitched the doll to harm the family, some of the family's guests ran out of the Otto's house swearing that the doll had tried to strangle them, Eugene's parents discover bruises and burn marks on the child, a child who amuses himself speaking casual chatting with Robert by alternating his child's voice with the voice of his doll, hoarse, almost superhuman, almost diabolic, in short the Robert doll scares the whole neighborhood. Sparing all the scary details that set the context of my story, Eugene ends up dying alone with his allegedly haunted doll.

At the end of the video, Squeezie announces that the doll can now be seen in a museum in the United States, at the Art and Historical Museum in Key West, Florida. Stunned by this news, I looked to see if this information was true, and God it was. I immediately told my parents, asking them if we would be passing through Key West on the trip, and of course, on the last three days, just before returning to France, we would make a diversion to Key West, so it was decided: I would meet the Robert doll on the last full day of our trip.

We enter, and a redheaded lady in her fifties is at the reception; we talk to her to find out about the museum and incidentally to find out about Robert from the most qualified person: the museum guard. There, we don't joke with Robert : to take a picture of him, you have to ask him a question and wait for his answer; some say that a bright reflection in his black eyes means a positive answer. The lady warns us that some people weekly disrespect the doll, and it ends up sending a letter of apology to Robert at the museum so that he will stop the mischief, she adds that there is a video of a man hitting Robert's glass : this man died later that day in a road accident. We, I, little French that I was, naively asked if I could ask Robert to take a picture of him - as advised - in French - in a foreign language - and what did the lady reply :  Try it, you'll be the very first.

We started the visit, my family and I were really enchanted, we were like crazy, we explored all the corners of the fort in search of Robert, apprehending all the same our meeting. We pass old cannons, military costumes, old rusty weapons... and as we turn down a hallway on our right: there he is, Robert, the century-old doll, accused of being the reason of multiple unexplained deaths in Key West, the inspiration for the Annabelle and Chucky dolls, the main subject of Squeezie's horror video; here we are face to face. The doll is tall, sitting on a chair and enclosed in a glass cage. Behind him, letters of apology from multiple countries : Mexico, Germany, Qatar, all written in English and imploring Robert to break the curse he cast on them, which dissuaded us being impolite. I take my courage in both hands and say  Hello Robert, I am from France and will be delighted to take you in picture. Could I ? , in French, a world first. I take a picture of him and send it to all my friends via Snapchat to show that I was the bravest (reckless ?) kid of my generation. With my photo taken, we hurriedly finished our visit and returned to the hotel.

Gene Otto died in 1974 and when a new owner moved into the house on Eaton Street, their ten-year-old daughter was delighted to find Robert the Doll in the attic. But her delight ended soon when she claimed that Robert was alive and that the doll wanted to hurt her. She awoke often in the middle of the night screaming in fear and told her parents that Robert had moved about in the room.

Robert the doll is back! Stolen from the crime scene from the end of the first film, the doll is given to the owner of a museum and set up as a cursed attraction for a big profit. When a young and nave student named Emily (Tiffany Ceri) gets a night shift job at the museum, she is immediately spooked. And when the bodies of her co-workers begin piling up, she teams up with hunky nightwatchman Kevin (Jason Homewood) to uncover the evil secrets surrounding the doll who looks like a constipated Willem Dafoe.

The 71-year-old rocker had a nightmare year in 2019 which saw him battle a host of health setbacks including a fall, neck surgery, an infection in his hand, and hospitalisation for the flu, and he has now claimed his ailments may have been caused by a haunted doll. ff782bc1db
