Greatest Hits is a greatest hits album by English rock band the Cure. It was first released in Japan on 7 November 2001,[6] before being released in the UK and Europe on 12 November and then in the US the day after. The band's relationship with longtime label Fiction Records came to a close, and the Cure were obliged to release one final album for the label. Lead singer Robert Smith agreed to release a greatest hits album under the condition that he could choose the tracks himself. The band also recorded a special studio album released as a bonus disc to some versions of the album. The disc, titled Acoustic Hits, consists of the eighteen songs from the North American release re-recorded using acoustic instruments.

There hasn't been a new Cure album since 2008's 4:13 Dream, but that didn't stop them from launching a huge world tour earlier this year. Every night they play for three hours, mixing in big hits like "Pictures of You" and "Friday I'm in Love" with lesser-known songs like "At Night," "Primary" and "Out of This World." Each show wraps up with "Boys Don't Cry." We asked our readers to select their favorite Cure songs. Here are the results.

Once upon a time, perhaps around the same time Michael Jackson made the fateful decision to destroy his face and reemerge as Webster, a band that helped pioneer the entire alternative music scene released one of the definitive "greatest hits" albums in history. Not only was Staring At The Sea: The Singles a monumental success for the Cure, but a much needed shot in the arm for a entire genre of music, that was surviving on the support of college radio. When music historians look back to quantify the contribution of the alternative movement, they would be remiss and unfairly unjust if they placed bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Smashing Pumpkins at the top of the mantle. The alternative scene never would have made the commercially viable leap to the mainstream without Nirvana's Nevermind, but to dismiss and forget the foundation laid by the Sex Pistols, Sonic Youth, Pixies, R.E.M., Violent Femmes, Clash, and the Cure would be to deny most of the movement's best music.

Having been idolized by the children of South Park, one would think that Smith (a pisher at age 42) would have been satisfied with his success and moved on and learned how to fly fish, but someone managed to convince him and his fellow band mates to return to the studio to record this brand new greatest hits collection which has both some drawbacks and incredibly bright moments.

By way of distinguishing GREATEST HITS from the other Cure collections on the market, let's first note that most of the doom and gloom for which the band is often derided is largely absent here due to the disinclusion of most of their early material. The bulk of this disc is devoted to mid-period cure classics such as the simultaneously innocent and randy "Let's Go to Bed," the breathless, horn-driven "Close to Me," and the bouncy, jazz-tinged "The Lovecats." To prove that the Cure didn't peter out after the Reagan era, GH reminds us that the transcendently effervescent pop gem "Friday I'm in Love" and the hard-driving rocker "Never Enough" stand as tall as the group's earlier efforts. A couple of attractive new tunes are tacked on for the benefit of those who've already got everything else here. 006ab0faaa
