Hybrid poetry/ceramics workshop
$375 / 8 weeks
Wednesdays starting September 10 from 6:30 am-8:30 pm
This generative workshop blends poetry and ceramics, inviting participants to explore how artistic forms and language interact. On alternating weeks, we will dive into the fundamentals of hand-building with clay—coiling, slab, pinch, and glazing—while also engaging in the poetic tradition of ekphrasis, writing about and through art.
Through guided exercises facilitated by Madelaine Caritas Longman and peer critique, participants will explore ekphrasis, form and writing from their experience working with art, allowing their writing to be shaped by their ceramic creations. The ceramics portion is open-ended, encouraging intuitive making under Gage Michael Wheatley’s guidance.
Whether you're a writer curious about clay or a ceramicist drawn to words, this workshop offers a space to merge materiality and metaphor, process and poetry.

Generative poetry workshop
$200-250 sliding scale / 8 weeks

Poetic forms have tangled histories. They leap countries and cultures, traverse oceans and centuries, shapeshift and reincarnate across generations. How can we write with and into these twists and echoes? When do we defy and when do we speak in chorus with the histories whispering beneath a poem’s surface? And how can we as poets today tap into age-old forms to say something new?
This class will explore a different poetic form each week, including the pantoum, sonnet, ghazal, zuihitsu, and lyric essay. While participants are not required to adhere to these forms, learning about these traditions will sharpen our attention to the techniques and histories we embrace and/or resist in our own writing. Through reading widely and writing wildly, we will explore the risks and possibilities infusing today’s literary ecosystem, and how our poetic voices can find their niche to thrive with integrity and aliveness.
Open to all skill levels, from beginners to experienced poets.
