2XX series players were mid to high end players manufacturered and marketed by Philips/Magnevox that resembled existing home media center equipment, like CD players and VCRs. Common features among these models included front-loading disc trays and front mounted controls, input ports, and displays.

4XX series players were low to high end players released by Philips/Magnavox later on in the CD-i platform's lifespan. The 450/550 in particular was designed to resemble other game consoles of the time and sell at a significantly reduced cost, while the 470/490 were designed to integrate into 26cm hi-fi systems.
