The Canopy is a diverse and dynamic co-op 12-bedroom house by Lake Merritt in Oakland, California. We have monthly chores that involve house cleaning, bi-weekly farmers market runs, and cooking Sunday dinner. 

THE HOUSE
The Canopy is a community housed in a 3-story walk-up in Oakland, California. We have 3 beautiful rooms on the second floor that we are looking to fill with folks who are excited to engage in our lively community. We are located ten minutes from Lake Merritt, less than a mile from BART (many bus lines also stop near the house), and a 10-minute bike ride from downtown Oakland. There is ample street parking around our house, although there are no assigned parking spots. Our expansive kitchen encourages cooking projects of all sorts, with a pantry, two refrigerators and a deep freezer stocked with local produce from the farmers market (included in the shared food plan). The main living room adjoins the kitchen and is a frequent site of both planned and unplanned gatherings. The ground-level garage has been transformed into what we call the Dreamspace: a mixed-use creative space that can be used for music jams (there’s a stage!), dance parties and practices, art projects, woodworking (power tools included), and more!

Access Info: We mask for 5 days after travel, particularly risky events, or an exposure, but most of the house members do not mask outside of the house.

OPEN ROOMS

1. THE HEART OF THE HOUSE (GF1): This cozy 109 sq. ft room is the most affordable room in the house and is nearest to the kitchen, which is a hub for community in the house. It has great light from a window that faces a shared balcony. It's perfect for a simple life with a bed and a workstation. Monthly rent for this room is $900.

2. TWISTED REDWOOD (GF4): This 125 sq. ft downstairs room has a sliding glass door that connects directly to an expansive communal deck that is great for lounging in the sun. The room is one of the quieter ones in the house and it is one of four that does not share a wall with any other bedroom. Monthly rent for this room is $1075.

3. GRUBBY FLAMINGO (TF3): This 140 sq. ft upstairs room has two sets of windows, one set facing north, the other facing west, with excellent airflow and a beautiful golden hour view of downtown. It has a medium sized open closet. Monthly rent for the room is $1090

4. SHIFTY OTTER (TF4): This 150 sq. ft upstairs room has a large east-facing window that lets in lots of natural light and is one of the largest rooms in the house. It is adjacent to the upstairs living room, which is often used as a quiet reading room or work space. Monthly rent for this room is $1100.

5. UPSIDE DOWN (TF6): This 125 sq. ft upstairs room has a large east-facing window that lets in lots of natural morning and mid-day light. It has a large closet and is close to the upstairs small bathroom. Monthly rent for this room is $1060.

Utilities are $140/month and include everything (power, water, trash, gas, internet, etc). We have a voluntary shared food program on a sliding scale of  $170-$290/month for all the food you care to eat. Each of us also contributes $25/month for various supplies that keep our house functioning, and optionally to the house’s collective event fund.

Our love for Oakland

Oakland is an amazingly vibrant and diverse city. We’d like our house to more and more reflect the city we live in. Even though most of us are not originally from here, we are mindful of how we contribute to gentrification, and want to give back to the community. All people with their stories, identities and heritages are welcome in the house. Our shared values and varied backgrounds are key elements to making such a magical place to live.
