Why we started...
During the 2018-19 school year, a small group of parents from the Early Learning Center began a fundraising campaign to purchase books and materials for the school library. When our school was re-opened as a pre-K and K space, there was no functioning library. For several years, there were no librarians at any of the district elementary schools. Past administrators have purchased some books, and some have been donated, but as you can see we do not have nearly enough to fill our shelves. We were heartbroken to see the empty shelves, which were being used for storage by other teachers and indoor recess equipment. We decided to do something about it, and the Book Hive was born!
This year, we have had a part-time librarian, and realized that we had a desperate need to build our library into a welcoming, relaxing space where children can enjoy learning how to read. With the help of community members, teachers, parents, and a wide range of supporters, we are ready to achieve our goal!
About the ELC
The Early Learning Center at Smith School is the Poughkeepsie City School District’s pre-K and Kindergarten school, serving approximately 460 students on a daily basis. During the 2017-18 school year, 135 pre-K students and 335 K students attended the school on a daily basis.
All students at the ELC receive free breakfast and lunch, and the majority (93%) are Black, African-American, Hispanic, or Latino.
The ELC Parent Teacher Association has been revitalized over the course of the 2018-19 school year, with the goal of providing all of our students an equitable learning environment that rivals the best the children might receive at other area schools, public or private. We firmly believe that all of our children deserve to learn in a safe environment that provides them with the resources to foster their creativity and empower them to become lifelong learners and citizens. That begins with a well-appointed library. All donations for the Book Hive will go to the ELC PTA, who then uses the money for books, and if we reach our goals, new furniture!
About our kids
Our kids are amazing! They are funny, smart, and ready to learn all about the world around them. They need a place that encourages curiosity and embeds a love of learning. We believe they deserve the best, and we want to make sure they have a library they can visit and develop a love of learning and reading.
