The Bioenergy Project is looking to expand access to food waste recycling by repurposing food-grade drums into modular, scalable composters that can function as an aerobic, anaerobic, or bokashi composter system. Check out the education page to learn about the science behind the three techniques and to learn more about our educational/curriculum packages for schools!

In Brief:
The Bioenergy system is a portable, small-scale wastewater treatment device that recycles organic waste (like food or livestock manure) and/or grey water (from sinks or even toilets) into useable fertilizers, environmentally safe discharge, and even the potential for biogas (methane) energy. What makes the Bioenergy System unique is the packaging and installation. Inspired by a Matryoshka Doll, it uses recycled food grade drums of descending size stacked inside of each other with all the parts, pumps, and pipes cut-to-size and ready to go no tools or glues needed from the customer. Think of it as the IKEA of organics recycling. Fast and easy to manufacture, efficient and cheap to ship, and it's simple and straightforward to self-assemble.
There are also no moving parts, everything is in a liquid state, as you add waste or water it naturally pushes everything through to the other side. You can then carry or pump it away or place it somewhere where gravity can do the trick for a completely off grid system.
One Product - Multiple Modes - Infinite Addons
Inside of a single 55-gallon drum are smaller drums. This helps maximize space and make shipping more affordable, creating the best value for your dollar.
All the components are inside, and no matter if you intend to use it as an aerobic wastewater treatment system for simplicity or to treat grey water, or an anerobic digester to generate biogas for heating and cooking, or a bokashi system to compost large amounts of food waste as fast as possible - this system can do that! This product does NOT include a means of pre-processing (garbage disposal) and adding waste into the system. Contact for recommended options.
The 'Main Digester Tank' and 'Secondary Digester Tank' can be used for anaerobic digestion to generate biogas or equipped with air stones to become an aerobic digester. Or these two tanks can be filled to the top with food waste, covered in bokashi inoculant, and sealed tight.
Then use the piping that comes in the kit to easily drain off the nutrient rich run-off. Whichever of the three you choose, they all feed into the 'Water Treatment Tank' with some synthetic grow media meant to help separate any remaining organic solids and provide surface area for nitrifying bacteria to convert ammonia/nitrites into nitrates (plant fertilizer) for your final 'Liquid Fertilizer reservoir' tank.
From this reservoir the choice is yours: a powerful liquid fertilizer for your garden? Add in an air stone of your own to make it a compost tea brewer to further enrich it? Perhaps have it become the reservoir of an organic hydroponic system? You can either modify it yourself or purchase one of our easy DIY addon packages!
