Army’s cultural and ethical foundation is its values and the bonds of trust and respect between each and every person who joins in service to our nation.

Organisation structure

The Australian Army command structure is hierarchical. Divisions and brigades are responsible for administering groupings of smaller units that are comprised of Regular Army (full-time), Army Reserve (part-time) or a combination of both.

Our leaders are at the forefront of a world class Army effectively meeting 21st century challenges. They ensure Army contributes to the protection and advancement of Australia’s national interests

Community engagement

The Australian Army is actively involved in community engagement in Australia and overseas. Through these activities we strengthen our knowledge and contribute to improving the lives of others.

Ranks

The rank system forms the backbone of the Australian Army’s structure and defines a soldier or officer’s role and degree of responsibility. The ranks are based upon those of the British Army, although there are some differences in the way they are displayed. 

Army Indigenous community

Army supports the Australian Government’s Closing the Gap commitment made in 2008 to improve the lives of Indigenous Australians.
