About Song Dynasty Gongbi Ink Painting

Gongbi, also known as "fine strokes painting", is one of the traditional Chinese painting categories. The name derives from the Chinese Gong Chin meaning tidy (meticulous brush technique). It requires subtlety, meticulousness and highly coloured. Be it figure painting or flower and bird painting, neat and delicate techniques are used to depict details to obtain lifelike and stunning visuals.

Gongbi painting originates from silk painting during the China warring states period. The Gongbi style had its beginnings approximately 2,000 years ago during the Han dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) when Han’s political stability and prosperity favoured the advancement of the arts.

Chinese Gongbi paintings peaked between the Tang and Song Dynasties (618AD-1279 AD) and have developed during the Tang Dynasty when these refined paintings were endorsed and collected by the royal families of China. It is exclusive to the royal family and is required to meet the aesthetic standards of the supreme ruler. During that period of time, it is known as the "aristocrat’s painting".
