Checkers (or English draughts) is a classic two-player strategy game played on an 8×8 checkerboard with 12 pieces per side, restricted to dark squares. Players alternate diagonal moves, capturing opponent pieces by jumping over them when possible—a rule that is mandatory in most versions. When a piece reaches the farthest row, it is crowned a king, gaining the ability to move and capture backward as well as forward. The goal is to eliminate or immobilize all of your opponent’s pieces, and while gameplay is straightforward enough for beginners, it offers rich strategic depth—advanced AI like Chinook has even proven that perfect play leads to a draw .
