Mrs. Thatcher's Chemistry Class

Update: June 15th, 2020 Agenda Here & Activity Descriptions Here

You have now made it to your LAST WEEK of instruction! June 22-23 will just be days for teachers to do paperwork and submit grades. You will not need to do any work after the 19th as long as you successfully participate in the Unit 8 Test. This is your last required assessment to complete, and you must complete this test in order to NOT be in jeopardy of earning an incomplete.

Grades:

Just a reminder that if you successfully participate in all the online TESTS, you will be eligible to have the highest of these grade checkpoints become your semester grade: MT3, Q3, or Q4

Once we have been able to transfer your grades for the Unit 8 test into the Skyward gradebook, you should be able to see which of these is highest. That will be the letter grade that will appear on your semester transcript.

If you do NOT successfully participate in all the online tests OR have an F for all three of those grade checkpoints, then you will earn an ‘incomplete’ for the semester and you will need to work with your counselor to plan on how to make up the credits.

OFFICE HOURS this week are going to be through YouTube on Monday & Thursday.

Update: May 11th, 2020 Agenda Here & Activity Descriptions Here

If you got behind last week you will have until Wednesday, May 13th at 11:59PM to complete your Unit 6 test, but this is your ULTIMATE last chance! (This mid-week deadline is to allow us to publish your Q3 grades accurately.) Remember that participation in the unit tests are required for earning a grade this semester.

This week is the introduction of a new unit: Unit 7-Solutions! There are many vocabulary words that have specific meanings in chemistry. We will use this vocabulary and your previous knowledge of the mole to be able to describe aqueous solutions.

Tips on ALEKS:

  • Using the Periodic Table that ALEKs provides and use the ENTIRE MASS VALUES!
  • It prefers you to abbreviate the unit “mole” as “mol”.
  • Use the explanation feature for the questions that are hard! (This is the glasses icon on the right of each problem), it will step you through how to solve the problem!
  • All of this week’s assignments are due Sunday, May 17th at 11:59pm.

For students that are planning on taking AP Chemistry OR are interested in additional chemistry content within each unit, there will be enrichment activities that are optional and not graded.

Office Hours this week again are going to be streamed via YouTube Live, on MONDAY AND THURSDAY.

Update: May 4th, 2020- Agenda Here & Activity Descriptions Here

If you got behind last week you will have until Sunday, May 10th at 11:59PM, but this is your ULTIMATE last chance! At the end of this week you will have an online assessment for Unit 6 using ALEKS. For those of you who took your assessment in class I will take the better score of the two as your final grade for the test. For those of you who were absent for this test, this will be your opportunity to make it up.

This week’ is review and your assessment. There are your old assignments on ALEKS for you to study from, practice problems from your textbook, helpful links on your instructors websites, and your peers to help you prepare for our unit 6 assessment. Please take the Unit 6 test by this Sunday (May 10th) at midnight. You will immediately know your score after completing the assessment and have unlimited attempts to improve your grade only on the problems that you missed! Do your best work, and we will record your best score early next week!

  • All of this week’s assignments are due Sunday, May 10th at 11:59pm.

Office Hours this week again are going to be streamed via YouTube Live, on MONDAY AND WEDNESDAY so that you have two opportunities for office hours before you take the assessment on Thursday/Friday.

Update: April 27, 2020- Agenda Here & Activity Descriptions Here

Dear Chemistry Students,

I know that many of you had many challenges with ALEKS this past week and I know there was a lot of frustration as we just recently figured out what grades were going to look like for the remainder of the school year. We anticipated that there was going to be a steep learning curve with everyone figuring out how to use this new program. That is why we are not teaching you any official new content (this past week and the next couple of weeks are still review of unit 6!). I want to try to put your minds at ease a little:

  • Homework & quizzes still do not count towards your overall grade (0%). So if you did not get everything perfectly correct this week DO NOT WORRY. We mainly wanted you to learn how to navigate and use ALEKS. I learned about some options that are available to me when I create assignments, which I will be changing to help make completing these assignments easier.
  • Your grade can only go up from your mid-quarter grade! Your grade cannot get lower UNLESS you do absolutely nothing for the remainder of the school year.
  • This week I will still us using YouTube Live, but I’m thinking about using Microsoft Teams next week. If you have a preference, please let me know!
  • If you got behind last week (Week 4) you will have until Sunday, May 3rd at 11:59PM to complete Week 4 material, but this is your ULTIMATE last chance!

We decided to extend the time required to cover everything in this current unit of The Mole. So the Unit 6 Test is going to be pushed to NEXT week (May 4th - May 10th). This U6 Assessment will be online using ALEKS. For those of you who took your assessment in class, I will take the better of the two scores as your final grade for this test. For those of you who were absent for this test, this will be your opportunity to make it up (and even retake it). There will be more details on this in next week’s email.

Tips on ALEKS Learned Last Week:

  • This program is pretty specific in the answers that it will accept; I recommend using the periodic table that ALEKs provides and use the ENTIRE MASS VALUES!
  • It prefers you to abbreviate the unit “mole” as “mol”.
  • Use the explanation feature for the questions that are hard! (This is the glasses icon on the right of each problem), it will step you through how to solve the problem!
  • You have unlimited attempts on the homework and quizzes, so practice until you’re confident as these are the types of problems on the summative test!

Update: April 6, 2020

Hello! We as a chemistry team have been working on doing our best for you with all of the news from last week. Long story short-- we are doing our best, we hope you are all well, we miss seeing you in our classroom!

Quick Update:

Update: March 30, 2020

I hope this message finds you all well, here are some updates regarding chemistry class and of course your weekly work for chemistry!

Quick update:

- I have updated the Unit 6 Test scores. This took longer than anticipated as I needed to get all tests from the student support center. I have also put this in as a “no count” for the time as many students have missed this assessment, as we as a chemistry team have no option for making up or retaking any assessments.

- I have been trying to stay completely up-to-date on any missing or late work, so please keep emailing me assignments!

-Please do you best with completing these weekly activities, as I hope that I get to see you all again soon!

-I am ALWAYS here! So please email me with any comments, questions, concerns, or interesting science articles. I too am trying my best to make the most of this quarantine chapter of our lives!

Update: March 23, 2020

Hello IHS chemistry students, friends and families,

I hope that this letter finds you safe and healthy. I apologize for the delay in contacting you during our extended school closure. Our district and chemistry team of teachers have been busy working out a plan to best serve your learning opportunities during this time. Here are the basic points that need to be considered:

  1. Any late or missing assignments prior to the closure can be submitted for a grade. I would like a photo of the work in its entirety so I can grade the assignment and provide feedback. O% score assignments and quizzes do not need to be reported.
  2. The stoichiometry test will be added to the gradebook. At this point it will be graded but given a “NO COUNT” within skyward. Many students missed the test the day prior to the beginning of the closure. The test, corrections, and retake opportunities will be addressed at a future date.
  3. There will be no new graded or required assignments entered into Skyward during this time.
  4. Instruction will be provided on a weekly basis every Monday to maintain current chemistry skills and posted HERE. Skills may be applied in new content, but we will not teach additional skills at this time.
    1. The topic chosen for each week has been carefully chosen by us chemistry teachers based on what we are seeing students struggle with most, in addition to what previous skills/content that will continue throughout the remainder of the year.
    2. Each topic will have a few activities surrounding it including some sort of video instruction, content check, and an application to the world around us.
