Thanksgiving is famous for its delicious and comforting food. At the heart of the holiday is a big feast shared with family and friends. The star of most Thanksgiving dinners is the roast turkey, often served with stuffing made from bread, herbs, and vegetables.
Alongside the turkey, you’ll usually find mashed potatoes with gravy, sweet potatoes or yams, green beans, and cranberry sauce, which adds a sweet and tart flavor to the meal. Corn, rolls or cornbread, and casseroles like green bean casserole are also popular side dishes.
For dessert, pumpkin pie is the traditional favorite, often served with whipped cream. Other common desserts include apple pie, pecan pie, and sometimes sweet potato pie.
Each family may add their own special dishes, sometimes passed down through generations. Whether simple or elaborate, Thanksgiving meals are meant to be shared, enjoyed, and remembered.
Ingredients:
10 cups bread cubes (day-old, white or whole wheat, cut into ½-inch cubes)
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped celery
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
2–3 cups chicken or vegetable broth (depending on how moist you want it)
2 teaspoons dried sage
1 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and pepper to taste
Optional: chopped parsley, diced apple, cooked sausage, or nuts
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
Toast the bread: Spread bread cubes on a baking sheet and bake for 10–15 minutes until dry and slightly golden. Let cool.
Cook the vegetables: In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and celery, and cook until soft (about 5–7 minutes).
Mix it all together: In a large bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, cooked vegetables, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper. Slowly add broth, stirring as you go, until the bread is moist but not soggy.
Bake: Transfer stuffing to a greased baking dish. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake for another 15 minutes to crisp the top.
Serve warm as a classic side dish to your Thanksgiving meal.
