We moved into this house back in 2010 and moved out halfway through 2013 after making a pretty decent amount of changes (a house in our dream neighborhood popped up and we jumped on it like a velociraptor). But we loved this ranch, and a ton happened over the years we spent here (three Christmases, three birthday parties for Clara, writing and shooting our entire book, watching Clara take her first steps and say her first words). So it was definitely bittersweet to leave. Oh and here are a few other links that might help you get your bearings: a paint color breakdown & a video tour.

This is the living room after we painted the walls, painted the trim, painted the beams, built a console table for behind the sectional (see it all accessorized here), hung some subtle patterned curtains, and brought in a new rug, ottoman, and desk chair. We also got a larger media cabinet and built a leaning chalkboard along with adding some overhead lighting.

Kelly is the best. Full stop. As a couple from out of state, we really depended on her expertise to find a location that met our admittedly long wish list: wildflowers, a body of water, beautiful mountains, possible alpenglow, remote yet without being too hard to get to. She proposed several locations, and when we decided to go with our back up location the day before our wedding, she was so flexible and accommodating. She made sure we had a timeline that worked for us, and even made sure we knew when we could make an appointment to get our Colorado elopement marriage license.

The day of our elopement was an absolute dream. As someone who always feels awkward in front of a camera, Kelly made it comfortable and hyped us up the whole time, and the pictures she captured feel so authentic while conveying the magic we felt that day.

I'm based in Grand Junction, Colorado, and I proudly serve clients throughout the entire state of Colorado, as well as Utah! But i'll go anywhere your love is leading you. Puerto Rico? California? I pack up quick, and i'll be there!

Love is filled with drawings by Loren Long of the good and the bad of everyday life. It reminds readers that, if you're lucky, you know what love is before you can even say the word; it's around you all the time if you just pay attention.

De la Pea: I wrote a number of drafts. And it was meant to be just a purely uplifting poem that I could read to my daughter. But there was something hollow about it. There was something that didn't ring true. And what I realized is I had failed to acknowledge any sense of adversity.

Long: When I get this manuscript, it's just these words: "But it's not only stars that flame out, you discover. It's summers, too. And friendships. And people." And I'm reading this, and I'm thinking, "I can go in so many different directions." One of my ideas was maybe I'll do like a Norman Rockwell-type scene of children at the end of summer and they're moving away, there's a moving van. Another one would have been, like, maybe the death of a pet or perhaps the death of a loved one, maybe a grandmother. But then I also thought, you know, "I have divorce in my family; I have addiction in my family."

And what I'm illustrating here is a domestic dispute. And if you're reading this book with a child from a wonderfully stable home, great. But that's a way of sharing empathy with that experience. And if you are that child under the piano, you exist in this book.

And what I'd love to point out really quick about this image: There's still a lot of love in this spread. That mother loves that child. That father even loves that child. And he's of course comforted by his dog.

De la Pea: It blew me away. This is one we talked about a lot when he was doing the sketches and stuff. And I was so excited for this, and we both agreed that this was one of the biggest moments in terms of the idea of the poem as a whole.

I go into a lot of schools as an author, and sometimes I'll go into a very wealthy school and they've had an author before and they know how to do it; they're excited to bring me in. But I'll also go into some underprivileged schools. And occasionally when I'll walk into their school, a little boy or a girl will look up at me and say, "Hey mister, why would you come here?" In other words, they're saying, "Why are you wasting your time on us?" And it breaks my heart.

So for me, this was a very important moment. But in another way ... this child is also looking directly at the reader and daring you to look away. And he or she is basically saying, "I dare you to ignore my existence."

Long: And for me, as the artist of this book, the reason I felt the big face would be impactful is that it's the only moment like that in this entire spread. You're seeing a lot of scenes and a lot of involved compositions, and when you turn this page I wanted you to stop. So I like to think in terms of cinema, and if I was making a movie, what moments do I want the audience to slow down and think?

When you think of baby portraits, what do you think of first? There are the iconic sleeping newborn photos. Whether baby is curled up, or on their belly with their tush in the air, or posed on a prop, we all have our favorite newborn poses. Or maybe your first thought is of a happy, smiling, newly one year old. Frosting on their faces and hands as they dig into their birthday cake and celebrate their first birthday. Perhaps you think of a 6-9 month old baby who has just mastered sitting on their own. There are so many different milestones throughout the first year that we celebrate.

For non-parents, there might not seem like a huge difference between newborn and 3 month. Well, take it from someone who has spent a lot of time around babies of both ages: there is definitely a difference! Here are some of my favorite things about photographing the 3-4 month milestone.

Your baby might still be a tiny baby in a lot of ways, but at three to four months their personalities are absolutely starting to show. And trust me when I say those personalities come out during these portraits!

This milestone is the perfect time for family portraits. Your little one will be alert and awake during your family photos for the first time. These will make for such amazing keepsakes (not to mention perfect gifts for family and friends.)

Jonathon and Claire were absolutely wonderful on our wedding day and I couldn't recommend them highly enough. They were both so professional, accommodating and approachable. Their correspondence before the wedding was also fantastic, getting back to me about all my questions and making sure they knew everything they needed to know before the big day. They are a fantastic team and I am so pleased we chose them to capture our special day.

We cannot thank Jonathon and Claire enough for their talent and dedication to their photography and film for our wedding at The Balmoral. They are true professionals and such lovely people, we cannot recommend them highly enough.

When the story was published by Spin, only a few images were included. The rest were tucked away in storage. Recently, friends from the LABspace gallery in New York asked Hansen and Peacock about that day and wanted to see more. The photos were exhibited at the gallery before becoming a book.
