I have so many favorite authors that I can’t possibly name just one, so here’s an incomplete sampling: Mary Oliver, J. D. Salinger, John Steinbeck, Marilynne Robinson, Edna St. Vincent Millay. My favorite authors achieve the same magic that my favorite artist Andrew Wyeth does: they help me “keep my mind on what matters,/ which is my work,/ which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished” (Mary Oliver). My favorite author is Mark Z. Danielewski. To me, art is a discovery of our deepest fears and greatest desires expressed through beauty.Visual: "Can You Hear Me" by Christopher HuntHead of Media Division
My favorite author is K.L. Randis. To me, art means expressing the unspoken. If we could have said it, it wouldn't need to be art. But it can't be said. It can only be shown.Visual: "Eye of Maria Miles Heyward" by Edward Green MalboneHead of Prompts and Competitions Division
My favorite author is VE Schwab, for her books The Invisible Life of Addie Larue and Gallant. I love art (and reading) because they are methods of viewing the world separate from your own perspective.Visual: "Change in Me" by Marcy Ellis.Head of Posters and Marketing Division
My favorite authors are TJ Klune and Taylor Jenkins Reid. To me, art is an act of expression that is unique to each individual. What I love about art is that everything is subjective and open to interpretation. Not everyone needs to agree with loving a certain piece, but if someone loves a piece, it can change the life of the artist and can show the world all different types of art.Visual: "A weight on my Shoulders" by Kodi DelaneyHead of Fundraising Division
My favorite author is Madeline Miller. To me, art is a way to provoke feeling through visual beauty. Visual: Morning on the Seine 3, Claude MonetStaff
Currently, my favorite author is Barbara Kingsolver. I love how art has the ability to focus on otherwise ordinary things and transform the way you look at them. There will always be an art piece that gives a new opportunity to shock, challenge, awe, or inspire you.Visual: "Green to Yellow Leaves" by Andy GoldsworthyStaff
Currently, my favorite author is E. Lockhart, however, I typically read books by various authors for the content rather than the author themselves. Coming from a more scientifically driven mind, I find the artist's ability to capture the world around us, the thoughts we have, the growth of our species, and most prevalently what it means to be human particularly fascinating. My favorite author is my dad! (Andrew Coan)To me, art is about expressing feelings/emotions/experiences and I love being able to get a look into artists’ minds through what they create!Visual: "Our Story" by Ekaterina PopovaStaff
My favorite author is Grace Lin. I love art because you can see the thoughts and emotions of an artist by truly looking at their art work.Visual: "Boston Cremes" by Wayne ThiebaudStaff
As of right now, Rick Riordan is my favorite author. To me, art is anything that makes anyone feel anything.Visual: "Irisis" by Vincent Van GoghStaff
My favorite author is Mary Ann Shaffer. To me, art means expressing yourself and your beliefs in a unique and meaningful way.Visual: "Holy Sunstar!" by Paul MarcelliniStaff
My favorite author is Osamu Dazai. To me, art is a visual representation of the creator's mind.Visual: "Queen Jane Approximately" by Hope GangloffStaff
My favorite author/illustrator is Junji Ito and to me, art means expression; it doesn’t have to only be articulation of self when I say that, one can really express anything they want through being creative with words, sounds, pictures or colors.Visual: "The Doll" (La Poupée) by Hans BellmerStaff
My favorite author is Sally Rooney. Art to me is a way to view and experience life. Art is ever present, but only when you’re looking for it can you truly appreciate it.Visual: "The Artist's Garden at Giverny" by Claude MonetStaff
An author I enjoy is Wally Lamb. To me, art is a way to communicate the incommunicable, a universal connection, an escape, the truest, most versatile form of expression. Visual: "Summer Night" by Winslow HomerStaff
Art is a means of escape for me. Art reminds me of what it’s like to live or, simply, to be alive when it gets hard.Visual: "Laocoön and His Sons"Staff
Despite me being an avid reader, I can never truthfully answer the question of who my favorite author is. However, one of my all time favorite books is A Gentleman in Moscow written by Amor Towles. Whether it be through literature, photography, or visual art, I love seeing the passion people pour into their own masterpieces. Visual: "The Impact of a Book" by Jorge Méndez BlakeStaff
Weirdly enough, I haven’t read many books by the same author, thus I don’t think I can correctly claim an author as my favorite. However, in her work “To Kill a Mockingbird,” I believe that Harper Lee truly shows how much change, inspiration, and message literature can create. I’d say that art, in all forms, is a way for people to express themselves and their beliefs in a creative fashion. Visual: "Water Lilies" by Claude MonetStaff
My favorite author is E. Lockhart. To me, art is a form of expression to show one's emotions. And hopefully inflict that emotion onto the viewer or reader. Visual: "Almond Blossoms" by Vincent Van GoghStaff
I don't have a specific favorite author, but my favorite style of writing is either poetry or nonfiction novels. Additionally, I love appreciating art pieces not only for the talent and effort put into them, but also trying to dig deeper into what it is the artist wants the viewer to take from their work.
