What starts with students in classrooms across Australia and New Zealand leads to designing the infrastructure of the future. The possibilities are endless, and Aurecon's Bridge Building Competition encourages students to unlock their potential.
The award-winning Aurecon Bridge Building Competition is back and bigger than ever in 2019, offering students a real-world experience of what they can look forward to as future engineering students and professionals. It provides an opportunity to explore the possibilities of STEM learning in a fun and exciting environment.
The competition is open to Year 8 and 9 students in Australia, and Year 9 and 10 students in New Zealand across seven locations.
How it works
Schools can register teams (at no cost) to take part in both the physical and digital elements of the competition. Using materials supplied by Aurecon, students are tasked with designing and constructing a model bridge following the construction guidelines provided.
Judging days will take place in September, and all competitors are invited to gather at venues across Australia and New Zealand for a fun-filled day. Bridges will be load tested and assessed for visual appeal, workmanship, innovation, creativity and functionality.
This year the Bridge Building Material Kit has been changed, along with the competition guidelines. You can review the updated guidelines and kit materials by clicking the link below.
Start with a digital design
We also encourage students to submit designs in the optional digital component of the competition to cultivate curiosity and ready students for a digitally disrupted engineering future. Teams can use SketchUp or AutoCAD software to design their bridges before they start construction.
The digital designs need to be submitted one month prior to judging day, with expertAurecon engineers analysing each design. The top digital designs from each location will be showcased on judging day.

Great prizes to be won!
Prizes are awarded on the judging day to students and schools across five award categories:
