We hope that you are excited about the upcoming devotional.
Remember, it's on the 23rd of January at 7pm - 8:30pm. The stake presidents have received an email from Elder Ames with the details, including a Zoom link. Please encourage all of the people that you serve to attend; that is, of course, all of the leaders who have a responsibily in their calling to gather Israel on both sides of the veil!
To help you to get the word out, here are two pdf's. One is a flyer that you can copy and amend to suit your needs, and the other is a copy of that email to the stake presidents that has more of the details, including the Zoom link:
To take a closer look at either one, click the pop-out button in its upper right-hand corner.
Last month we had a brief article about the Family Name Assist tool accompanied by a video of a RootsTech session that explained the foundations of the tool and also its practical use. This month we wanted to summarize the presentation and emphasize some of its key points. We also thought it might be good to let you see the slide stack, so we figured out how to get it here on this site so that you could go through the different sides at your own pace .
Family Name Assist was developed to facilitate the process of getting new members (converts) to the temple to be baptized and confirmed for a close family member. Studies have shown that the likelihood of retaining new members is increased when they attend the temple and feel themselves drawn closer to the Savior through the power of the Spirit; likewise the Spirit further draws them closer to the Savior through their act of proxy service in behalf of a close relative.
How can we measure this? In the FHAR (Family History Activity Report), in the bottom section, YTD Submitters Unit Detail, there is a column titled "New Members" that contains the number of new members who have submitted at least one name to the Family Search tree. The result for the combined units in our coordinating council is close to 6%, but that may be understating the true picture regarding those new members who have actually been to the temple because, 1) some new members may have taken a name given them by another member of the church, and, 2) the new member statistic includes those who are aged 8-10. Correcting for those errors will bring the percentage up, but probably not enough to make us comfortable - as always, there is enough work for us to do.
How do you see the FHAR? You have to get with someone who has access to LCR and have him show you the report. Jo and I get ours from our area manager at Family Search. See our December newsletter article for more on the reasoning behind access limitations in LCR.
That slide stack is presented below as a pdf file - I hope that you will take time to glance through it; I found it to be good training:
It's a new year, so we thought that you might like to have some information about what's going on at the temple. We know that some of the living ordinance procedures can be challenging, so please check out this first section for clarification, and then let us know if it's not clear, and we will try to help.
Prayer Roll – please remind members to make Prayer Roll submissions by using your Tools app on your cell phone or by going to ChurchofJesusChrist.org, rather than phoning them in to the temple office, or sending them to the temple email.
LIVING ORDINANCE CORRESPONDENCE - The Winter Quarters Nebraska Temple email (winte-off@churchofjesuschrist.org) is for Living Ordinance correspondence.
Own Endowment - To make an appointment for receiving your Own Endowment please send in a scanned copy of your signed (by Bishop or Branch President and Stake President) Recommend for a Living Ordinance (RFLO). (see section 27 in the Church Handbook)
Licensed Marriage or Sealing after Civil Marriage - please send in a scanned copy of your Recommend for a Living Ordinance (sealing) signed by your Bishop or Branch President and Stake President. For a licensed marriage the temple will also need a copy of your marriage license. If either of the spouses have been sealed before the temple will also need a copy of their letters of cancellation (female) or clearance (male). (see section 38.4 in the Church Handbook)
Sealed to a Deceased Spouse or Parent - please send in a scanned copy of your Family Group Sheet from FamilySearch.org. The Family Group Sheet will need to show all dates and places of birth, death and all temple ordinances before a sealing can take place. Any sealing involving a living person is considered a Living Ordinance and needs a special appointment.

The gospel is perfect, but a divinely commissioned church is required to preach it, maintain its purity, and administer its sacred ordinances.
