TFB CADENCE

August 11, 2020

Purpose in every day.

"Will you let the world happen to you, or will you happen to the world?"

In times of uncertainty, it is imperative to stay engaged in the present. We cannot control others' actions, responses, or attitudes; we can control ours'. We will make a daily commitment to follow Benjamin Franklin's thoughtfulness; every TFB class member (OLP students should do this, too!) has begun daily morning/evening journal entries, stating:

What good shall I do today?

What good have I done today?

And while we cannot control others, we can positively influence those around us by actively engaging and reflecting in the good that we can achieve. We hope that beyond teaching music, we can help your children think about how to better organize themselves for school and how to have purpose in every day.

BOA GOES ON!

THE FRANKLIN BAND WILL BE SEE LIVE IN HOMES ALL ACROSS AMERICA!

SEE BELOW!

NEW FALL SCHEDULE

As we discussed at our marching band kick-off meeting the band will be making a shift to a new model for our fall production. Our band will be performing in 3 different ways.

  1. Competitive Field Show

    • Per our students' request, we will still learn and perform a shortened version of our competitive show. This will take less time and require less funds. Benefits are that the students will get to perform the entire show more often than they typically would even in a full season. We will perform this at 2 BOA LIVE events for adjudication in October, football games, and community performances.

  2. March-a-Thon "Macy's" Show

    • Much like bands who perform in the Macy's parade we will learn a short parade show that we can turn and perform with formations on the street. This will be a way to give back to our community, provide performance opportunities for our students, and FUND-RAISE! This will be made of our field show music so it will fit right into what the students already know. The Front and Guard will have a part in this as well. What a great thing for our Macy's application for 2022!!!!

Example of a Macy's Show

  1. Future Corps

    • Small groups of our more experienced marchers will form mini groups that can create their own productions with small sets of drill and music! They can perform at businesses, local community events, and this could exist well PAST marching season for those groups who wish to continue.

Example of Future Corps

Example of a large Future Corps

To accomplish this, we will be adjusting our fall calendar. You will notice that there will be no Friday rehearsals when we don't have a game and that October has a lighter rehearsal schedule as we switch gears into the Macy's show.

Fees Update

Whereas, BOA/MFA is shifting from an in-person evaluation to a virtual one, Contest of Champions has been cancelled, and there are fewer football performances (no travel to away games), there will be a significantly reduced fee for participation in TFB! We still may provide travel for students who cannot drive to march-a-thons, and thus need to rent several school buses to socially distance. We also need to collect fees for next years mini- camp. Every family in the band technically pays foward to the next year for mini camp. Last years seniors paid for this years freshmen etc. Based on this information the restructured band fees will now be the amounts below.

$50 - Due September 1st

$20 - New Mask/Uniform Accessory Fee. - Due Sept 1st

$50 - Due October 1st

The new mask/accessory fee will be for the masks that will be made by our fabricator team. These are specially designed to match our uniform, be functional in the show, and they are sewing in an extra filter for every student. Each student will get 2 masks. This is required, as it is now part of their uniform. This is the final accessory fee.

**** ALL PAYMENTS SHOULD BE MADE TO --THE FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS -- AND DROPPED IN THE BOX IN THE BAND ROOM OR MAILED TO THE BAND PO BOX. THE ACCESSORY FEE MUST BE A SEPARATE CHECK FOR $20.****

If you already paid MORE than the amount required for the season you will be contacted by the booster treasurer directly about your refund.

Join the challenge below!

The Friends of the Franklin Band’s inaugural group of generous corporate and family donors supported The Franklin Band’s 2019-2020 season to the tune of more than $30,000! Thank you to all who participated.

We’re excited to announce the kick-off of our 2020-2021 campaign with a 30-day Friends Challenge. Between today and August 24th, we’re on a mission to beat last year’s total!

How can you help? So many ways……

  • Ask a business you patronize to support the Band through Friends. Potential impact: if every current family brings on board just ONE corporate sponsor at the First Chair Circle Level of $250, The Franklin Band will receive $50,000! Of course, the corporate sponsor also benefits, based on sponsorship level (see attached support levels).

  • Ask your employer to become a Friend of the Franklin Band – same corporate benefits apply, based on sponsorship level.

  • Think of civic organizations and foundations that may offer grant opportunities – in addition to our corporate and family sponsors this past year, the Band received generous grants from the Franklin Noon Rotary and the Delek Fund for Hope. If you have suggestions for civic and/or foundation support, please contact Mary Ann Smokler, Friends Coordinator at msmokler@bellsouth.net.

  • Volunteer on the Friends committee to reach out to potential sponsors, families and TFB alumni.

  • Post on social media – ideally multiple times – during the 30-day challenge. Our friends, neighbors, and families want to support our hard-working kids – they just need to know how! Take the opportunity to tell band stories, show pictures, and talk about what TFB means to your child and your family.

  • Finally, we realize this is not an ideal time for many people to make personal donations, but if you are in a position to do so, please join the Friends of the Franklin Band in honor of your band student and sport your Friends window decal proudly. Family gifts can be made as a one-time donation or through a monthly bank draft or credit card charge – for as little as $5 per month. NOTE: This is a great way for grandparents and recent graduates to participate!

Attached is the Friends form that you can share with others. Also, supporters can always visit our web site for more information on last year’s donors and how to participate in this year’s program - https://thefranklinband.org/posts/friends-of-the-franklin-band/.

We all know how hard TFB members, directors, and staff work to make this a great experience for our students – the more we are able to generate financial support for them, the less they have to worry about doing more fundraising to accomplish the great music education and programming we all want and have come to expect.

Thank you very much for your help by supporting The Friends of the Franklin Band!

~ Mary Ann Smokler

We are The Franklin Band

If you’ve been around The Franklin Band for even a short time, you know that we’re a family and that we take care of each other. We also take pride in representing and giving back to our community. Now, perhaps more than any other time, we are reminded of how our individual health and safety affects the health and safety of everyone around us. We ARE in this together.

Everyone has done an outstanding job adhering to our safety protocols during all rehearsals so far. As we head into the school year, let’s be intentional about continuing those safe practices. Let’s also remember to use the same good habits—including masks, social distancing, and hand washing—OUTSIDE practice times. We don’t anybody with TFB to get sick and miss out on any time with the band this season, and we certainly don’t want to spread the virus or risk an early end to our season.

Let’s renew our commitment to be safe and take care of each other!
