Director's Calendar

Notes from Vogt

Please welcome Dakota Jean Vogt to the Franklin Band Family! Mama, baby, and the rest of the family are all doing well.

Game Day

We have a home football game against Ravenwood High School this Friday September 2nd. More details to be added to the Director's calendar as soon as they are available, but timing should be similar to our Aug 19th home game against Riverdale.

Full Ensemble will attend away games

One of the TFB core values is community. In an effort to cultivate community ties and to give the students additional performance opportunities, full ensemble (including winds, percussion and guard) will be attending all away football games. Please see the Director's Calendar for those dates.

Immediate Volunteer Needs for TFB

Our first competition is just around the corner! Our band students have worked so hard and I know we are very proud of what they’ve already accomplished. We really do have the best kids!

In order for our amazing kids to do what they do best, there are things that need to take place behind the scenes. It really does take all of us doing our part to be the support for the Franklin Band program. Here are two immediate and very important needs:

1) Between props and Front Ensemble, the band has a lot of things that need to be pushed - speakers, front ensemble instruments, etc. We need parents to step up and volunteer to do this at every game and every competition. It’s a short amount of time and work, but with a great reward! Contact Dustin Neely at dustinneely105@gmail.com or phone#423-208-6255 for more information and to raise your hand and be a part.

2) When the band travels to competitions, there are always nutrition needs that need to be met. The students are provided with snacks for the trip (at the beginning, after performing, on the way back to the hotel, etc) and sometimes meals need to be planned for the entire band. (Pizza in the parking lot at Lucas Oil Stadium between performances and breakfast to eat on the way are a couple of examples.) The band needs a couple of parents to volunteer to coordinate and prepare snack bags for the buses and organize meals when necessary. The meals would only be necessary when we travel to Indianapolis, and it wouldn’t be for all meals. Some of the meals the kids will pay for themselves at the stadium or a mall, but sometimes the timing is too tight for that to happen. It all depends on our schedule for the weekend.

For the snacks - all band parents are asked to contribute snacks, and then the parent volunteers divide them into individual bags for all of our band students. The coordinating parents would have help from other parents for this part, so don’t think you have to do it all on your own!

What would our Franklin Band look like and what could we accomplish if every family put in as much effort and committment as you? Would it be better?

Our goal is for everyone to get involved in some way. As many parents can tell you, working with the band can be among the most rewarding experiences you can have with your student at FHS.

Please email fhsbandoffice@gmail.com for more information or to volunteer. It really does take all of us!

Thank you!!

Photo Button Picture Session TODAY Monday Aug 29th for Guard

Photo button pics for Color Guard will take place Monday 8/29 from 4:30-5:15pm to get all the GUARD pics done for those who have ordered Photo Buttons. Please find Karen or Cari between the band room and weight room wearing your Guard shirt. If you miss Monday, then Thursday 9/1 will be your last opportunity.

Thank you!

For Questions about photo buttons please contact Alyxius at 651.943.2473 or Cari at poochretreat@gmail.com

Reminder Regarding ACT dates

TFB directors absolutely understand the importance of the ACT for college admissions and encourage students to sign up. That said, please avoid taking the ACT on Oct. 22nd. This is the day of the Indianapolis Super Regional. Plan to take the ACT on these dates instead: Sept. 10th or December 10th.

Added reminder: please go ahead and fill out the absentee form below (and have your student inform their section) for the morning block of camp days for the date your student has chosen to take the ACT this fall so the directors can plan accordingly. Thank you!

Rehearsal Absence Form

Please do everything possible to avoid missing rehearsals. Directors count on students attending every rehearsal especially since they are learning new material every day.

If missing rehearsal is absolutely unavoidable, students must fill out this form: 2022-23 Rehearsal Absence Form before the rehearsal they are going to miss. **Students should also contact their section leaders in their section GroupMe before rehearsal so they can be aware as well.

NEWS FROM THE STAND!

News from the Stand!

Hello Band Parents,

Thank you to everyone who has already signed up for a Concession slot for the game on Friday (9/2).

We are still in need of shift 2 volunteers and Mac and Cheese\Taco meat donations.

The Baritones, Drum Major and Tubas (go tubas!) are taking the lead. However due to the small size of these sections we need additional parents to volunteer too.

Any questions please let me know.

Thanks

Rebecca Murphy

Schedule:

9/2 – Baritone, Drum Majors, and Tuba

9/16 – Mello and Clarinets

9/30 - Trumpet and Flute

10/21 - Percussion

• If you can’t volunteer for a shift, please sign up for Mac and Cheese or Taco Meat for our famous Super Nachos. Remember if you want to make it but don’t want to leave your crock pot, you can always bring it in a disposable pan and we can put it into one of ours to keep warm.

• For Senior parents – I know this is a big year for you and you want to see all the moments. We will find a job that works for you!

• Sign up to help the Grill team – they are always looking for help around the grill. Reach out to me and I will put you in touch with them

• Sign up to smoke a couple of Boston Butts – Concessions will provide the meat if you can provide the time! A big shout out to Bryan DeCuir for providing the BBQ for the 9/2 game.

• People always ask if they can bring me water or some food items. I cannot take donations of items but if you want to donate a Sams Club Gift card, I can always put those to great use.

• Come buy Concessions during the game!

Thanks everyone!

Personalized Parent Flags

Hello TFB families!

The Fabrication Team is very excited to offer personalized parent flags! These flags can be used all year and from one season to another! Of course, we will still be making our popular show-themed parent flags for your collection, but those will be made later in the season after our work for the show is done.

You will choose the color of your flag, then personalize it with your student’s name and instrument or section. Flags are $20 each and hand-made to order. All profits go to the band! You may pick up your flags at the merch table before home football games or at band booster meetings. We can’t wait to see all that TFB pride!

Mid-State Auditions

What is Mid-state?

Directly from the MTSBOA mid-state website: "Mid-State is a weekend event held each Spring that provides an opportunity for the best musicians of Middle Tennessee to perform with one another in large ensembles. Each Mid-State ensemble will prepare and perform a concert with just a few short rehearsals. To make the Mid-State Band or Orchestra, students must go through the audition process in the Fall, which includes three parts: scales, prepared music, and sight reading. The highest scored musicians in each section are selected to be a member of the Mid-State Band or Orchestra, with the top few high school musicians from each section qualifying for All-State."

Mid-State is a huge honor and a fun, exciting weekend for our students. TFB recommends every band student strongly consider auditioning. TFB Directors have published the audition music in schoology. Seniors in each section are often happy to help underclassmen work on their audition pieces and scales. Those who audition will frequently make it into Wilco Honor Band, which is a Friday and Saturday held usually at Brentwood Baptist Church.

2022-23 Mid-state Auditions will be held the following dates and locations:

November 19, 2022 | 11/12 Band & Orchestra, 9-12 Jazz

Antioch High School

December 3, 2022 | 9/10 Band & Orchestra

Wilson Central High School

Band Mid-State Weekend is usually held in early January at MTSU. More info to come once available.

*(Students ride the bus to Mid-State Weekend with other Mid-State students from Williamson County. Parents are responsible for picking up their students after their final concerts).

Flag Team: We need YOU on Labor Day

We are in pretty good shape for our Labor Day flag installation, but we need SIX more teams to get the job done. Labor Day is a week from tomorrow, and many people have the day off, so this should be an easy one to do!

Remaining routes are:

Farmington (2)

Fieldstone Farms (2)

Hillsboro Acres

Laurelbrooke

Please sign up today by following this link:

https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/9040b44a8a728a2fd0-usflag1

Finally, as fulfilling our obligation to the community depends on installation routes being staffed, we would like to ask those signed up for trailer assistance to please consider taking a route instead. Help at the trailer is intended as an alternative option for those who are unable to do delivery routes due to various limitations. If you have not signed up for your two routes this year, jump on in! After we fill Labor Day's needs, there are still many openings for Veterans Day in November!

Thanks for all you do to make The Franklin Band great!

Gimme 5!

Gimme 5! Please help us spread the word that we are seeking donations to fund our large instrument replacement program. You can forward the following URL: https://donorbox.org/gimme-five Please send it to grandparents, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and anyone who has a heart for our band program. You can also ask them to scan this QR code. One time donations are great, but recurring donations are even better!

TFB Family Show Etiquette

The Franklin Band is well-known and respected for being a kind and courteous program. So says Melissa Gufston-Hines of the O'Fallon HS Band, "We love when we get to see the folks of the Franklin Band at shows because we can always count on them being so classy."

Franklin Band Family Show Etiquette (this applies to Winter Guard, and all Concert performances)

*Come see the band perform.

*Show up early. Allow time to get to your seat.

*Avoid being a distraction (silence cell phones, only enter and depart between performances, keep children seated/as quiet as possible, etc)

*STAND AND APPLAUD EACH PERFORMANCE in recognition of the hard work and effort of the students. And no matter where we finish in the standings at the end of the event, applaud every band. They’ve all had many long, hard days just like our students.

*Focus on your Enjoyment of a performance or don’t comment at all. You don’t know who is sitting within hearing. This includes avoiding sending negative texts that someone could screenshot/forward to others. We only share positive comments about other bands. If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
