Tablets: Virtual Whiteboard Apps can be a great way to walk students through solving problems, revision processes, and more! One of the best features of these apps is that you can record your verbal explanation along with your visual demonstration while using a tablet pen. When you think of being in front of your students in a traditional classroom, it can be challenging to recreate the same instruction in an online course, especially as it pertains to problem-solving. This approach is perfect for smaller lessons on targeted topics, so it's better to avoid longer lecture-style videos. Break it up into several shorter videos that students can absorb. This also allows students to ask questions based on more specific subtopics, rather than referring to a single point in a much longer video.
When recording with whiteboard apps, make sure your video will be easy for students to view and understand by doing a few things:
Make sure you're in a quiet place.
Place your tablet on a hard surface - soft surfaces might block sound
If you will be seen on a picture-in-picture, check the lighting where you're recording.
Be aware that our IT department does not provide support for any of the apps on this page aside from Teams and Yuja.
Explain Everything is an easy-to-use tool for screen-casting from your tablet. It allows you to annotate over many file types (including spreadsheets!) or draw freely on an infinite whiteboard. You'll have access to a library of visuals, and can easily switch between on-screen brushes. The free version is very limited, but it may be enough if you only intend to create short, targeted videos.
Price (2022): Free with limited features, $35 a year for a single subscription.
Platforms: iOS, Android
Doceri allows you to annotate over an image or PowerPoint, or start from a blank whiteboard. You can record these presentations and upload them to your course, or (if you also purchase the PC app) you can screencast live to a computer. You can share your screencast as a video, as well as export it as a PDF if you want a still look at the final annotations.
Price (2022): Free for iPad app, $30 one-time charge for PC app.
Platforms: iOS, Windows
You can use your iPad as a whiteboard in Teams or Zoom! You can create a private meeting with both your computer and your tablet. Teams has a Microsoft Whiteboard built in, but for Zoom, you'll need a separate whiteboard app to share on the screen. Both Zoom and Teams will then allow you to record your video while sharing the tablet screen.
Price (2022): Free
Platforms: iOS, Windows
Another option for recording with annotation tools you might already be familiar with would be to do a screen recording through the tablet. You could annotate your content in Notability, Goodnotes, etc., and use your device's screen recording options (which vary, so feel free to reach out if you need help). Then, upload the saved content from your device into Yuja for processing, editing, and sharing. While this isn't as easy as the previous two options, it might be interesting for those who already have an annotation app they heavily use.
