For the portfolio internals, the two pieces marked highest will be submitted for grading
Essay Topic - A variety of topics for the opinion have been given to you all.

This year you are going to write a newspaper article about the historical event you will research as part of your History internal (we love to kill two birds with one stone). The art form of writing articles is in the detail. Less is more (you don't want to bore your readers - but you also want to be as accurate and as informative as possible). The purpose of articles, particularly newspaper articles, is to is to convey information as efficiently as possible.

In today's class we reviewed language features and covered film techniques including mise-en-scene, shot sizes, shot angles and we also covered another set of language features - demonstrative adjective, pronouns, quantifiers, pronouns/personal pronouns. We also broke down pronouns into indefinite, reflexive and possessive.

THESIS STATEMENTS
We continued practicing Thesis statements/essay introductions. Thesis statement exercise template is attached here. Remember - a thesis statement is a quality introduction. A thesis statement is made up of
Statement of the topic - attention capturing fact/statement about your topic
Statement of your claim or position - you state whether you agree or disagree / do not sit on the fence!
Then once you've stated your claim, you will set out your three main points which are the three main reasons to your CLAIM.
We also discussed the structure of an essay, which is like a hamburger

In today's class we discussed sentences, how to structure paragraphs using the SEXY method and we also covered some aspects of writing formal opinions.
We also introduced our first written piece for our portfolio - a formal opinion.

In today's class we started to discuss what SATIRE is. (Introduction to Satire)
HISTORY:
We started to go over the NZ Maori History Timeline covering from Early 1800 to 1880 (Pre Treaty, DOI, TOW, legislation that came in to play over the years which lead to land confiscations, the demographic of NZ during that time etc)
We also watched a video with the story about the Tainui/Waikato land wars

In today's class students were given most of class time to work on completing their formal opinions (as draft of the opinion is due today).

In today's class I introduced the next internal assessment - Information Literacy. We discussed what the requirements for this internal were and started to think about developing hypothesis. Refer to the video on the left hand side on tips of how to formulate a hypothesis. We will continue to practice how to write hypothesis statements in the next few weeks

In today's class we continued to work on developing hypothesises for our Information Literacy internal. Most of you have decided on the subject area you want to explore further. Homework for next Tuesday is to work on finalising hypothesis so that we can then move on to developing your key inquiry questions.
