Lawrence Anthony Mullaney made a promising start to his career under National Hunt rules with ten wins in his first two seasons but only added one more after that.
He rode as a conditional for Peter Easterby, who trained all but the last of his winners, the first of which was at Haydock Park on December 12, 1990, when Elder Prince took the lead after the last flight and stayed on to win the Beeches Farm Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle by three lengths. He had two more winners that season, followed by seven in 1991/92.
His final victory came at Sedgefield on October 13, 1992, when Furry Baby, trained by Maurice Avison, comfortably landed the Settrington Novices’ Handicap Hurdle by eight lengths. The five-year-old had won his previous start at Southwell eight days earlier under Russ Garrity. Lawrence kept the ride for one unplaced run. After a few more unsuccessful mounts that season, he did not renew his licence.
He began training at Malton in 2008 but relinquished his licence in September 2023, citing an increasingly difficult financial outlook as a key factor in his decision to quit. He then spent a couple of months working for Aidan O’Brien at Ballydoyle.
However, he was always keen to go back training if and when the right opening came, and in September 2024 he grasped an opportunity to resume, this time as a salaried trainer, based at Raikes Farm, Great Habton, near Malton.
He saddled his first winner since his comeback when Northern Cracksman scored at Newcastle under Billy Loughnane on January 25, 2025. This was followed three days later by Dash Power obliging at Wolverhampton.
He said: “It’s a major thing to be a salaried trainer as I just have to concentrate on the training rather than worry about the finances.”
